Scouting Report
Alabama (12-8, 4-3 SEC) fell to LSU 90-76 on Wednesday night in Baton Rouge. Alabama led briefly in the opening minute of the game but LSU quickly took the lead and would never trail again. The Tiger led by as much as 20 in the opening stanza before heading to halftime up 51-33. In second half the closest Bama would get to LSU was 9 points with 13:15 to go in the game. That was the only time the Tide would be within double-digits in the second half. Jaden Shackelford led the Crimson Tide with 21 points. He made 5 of 14 from 3-point range. Emmitt Williams paced the Tigers with 23 points. Alabama made 10 of 38 3-point shots in this game. However, LSU was better from field goal range making 50.7% of shots to Alabama’s 41.1%. The Tigers also dominated at the foul line hitting an impressive 95% (19/20).
Kira Lewis Jr. leads the Tide in scoring averaging 16.7 points per game. Petty, Jr. is not far behind Lewis at 15.8 points a contest. Petty leads the Tide in rebounding pulling down over 7 a game.
Arkansas (15-5, 3-4 SEC) fell to South Carolina 79-77 on Saturday in Fayetteville. This is a game that South Carolina led from start to finish. However, the game was fairly close most of the 40 minutes. In the first half the Gamecocks built as much as a 10-point lead before heading to halftime up 38-32. Carolina would lead by as much as nine in the second half with 3:33 to play USC led just 74-72. A Jair Bolden 3-point shot with 2:08 to play put the Gamecocks up 78-72. Arkansas countered with an Isaiah Joe 3-pointer but Carolina won the free throw battle in the final seconds to secure the win.
Guard Mason Jones (19.2 ppg) is the Hog’s leader in scoring. Sharp-shooting Isaiah Joe (16.8 ppg) is the second leading points producer. Joe has 72 made threes so far this season. Jones also leads the Hogs in rebounds (6.4 rpg).
Arkansas scores an average of 74.2 points per game (6th SEC). Defensively, they allow 64.0 points per contest (3th SEC). The Hogs like to shoot threes. They have taken 472 attempts from beyond the arc so far this season. The Hogs not only can shoot the three, they can defend it. Arkansas is No. 1 in the conference in 3-point shooting defense allowing just 24.6% of shots to be made. Arkansas also leads the league in steals averaging 8.5 of those per game.
It’s hard to believe that the Razorbacks have fallen below .500 in the SEC. It probably won’t be easy for them to win in Tuscaloosa.
