Scouting Report

Arkansas (14-3, 3-2 SEC) fell to Kentucky 73-66 on Saturday in Fayetteville. The two teams traded leads early in the first half, however, Kentucky took a 6 point lead with 8:15 left in the first half. The wildcats led for the rest of the half. In the second half Arkansas retook the lead at 46-44 on a pair of Mason Jones free throws. Kentucky, however, took the lead for good on Tyrese Maxey’s free throws with 5:58 to play in the game. Kentucky won this one off of rebounding (47-29). The Wildcats also had better shooting. Kentucky out-shot the Hogs 44%-33% from field goal range, 36%-31% from behind the arc and 74%-66% at the free throw line. Nick Richards led the Cats in scoring with 17 points. Arkansas’ Jones led all scorers in the game with 19 points.

Guard Mason Jones (18.2 ppg) is the Hog’s leader in scoring. Sharp-shooting Isaiah Joe (17.5 ppg) is the second leading points producer. Joe has 66 made threes so far this season. Jones also leads the Hogs in rebounds (6.1 rpg).

Arkansas scores an average of 74.1 points per game (6th SEC). Defensively, they allow 62.1 points per contest (3rd SEC). The Hogs like to shoot threes. They have taken 417 attempts from beyond the arc so far this season. Only Alabama (500), Vandy (426) and Auburn (437) have taken more. The Hogs not only can shoot the three, they can defend it. Arkansas is No. 1 in the conference in 3-point shooting defense allowing just 23.4% of shots to be made. Arkansas also leads the league in steals and average 9.1 of those per game.

Mississippi State (11-6, 2-3 SEC) defeated Georgia 91-59 on Saturday in Starkville. State led the entire game except for a brief time early in the first half. State’s lead reached with 20 (66-46) with 7:58 remaining in the game and 30 (81-51) with just under four minutes to go. The MSU dogs won this win their superior inside game hitting almost 68% for field goals. Neither team relied heavily on the 3-point shot but State hit twice as many of those shots (6) as Georgia (3). Forward Reggie Perry led State in scoring with 22 points. Perry also pulled down 12 rebounds to complete a double-double. Georgia’s Anthony Edwards led the Bulldogs with 19 points.

Forward Reggie Perry leads in Bulldogs in both scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg). Two other players, Tyson Carter (13.8 ppg) and Robert Woodard II (11.6 ppg) average in double figures. Guard Nick Weatherspoon earlier in the season returned to the team after a long suspension and is averaging 13.3 points in the seven games he’s played in so far this season. Mississippi State is fourth in the SEC in 3-point shooting accuracy (33.0%) but the Dogs have only made 288 attempts. That’s fewer than any other SEC team except for Kentucky (263). State’s biggest strength is rebounding. They are first in the SEC in rebounding margin (+8.3). MSU is also third in the SEC in blocks shots (5.4 bpg).

This is a another hard to pick game. There is so much parity in the SEC. Everyone can beat everyone else (except poor Vandy). State has improved with the return of Weatherspoon. They are playing in the Hump which isn’t a wonderful facility but the fans are pretty darn good. Arkansas’ morale is probably down some after losing that home game to UK. A game that most of the Hog nation was counting as a win. Give State the edge here.
