LSU (12-4, 4-0 SEC) defeated Texas A&M 89-85 on Tuesday night in College Station. In that game the Tigers seemingly had the game under control early leading 20-7 at the 13:19 mark in the first half. With 4:33 left in the half, A&M was still in the game though, trailing 33-25. LSU headed to the locker room at halftime up 42-32. In the second half Wendell Mitchell’s three narrowed the LSU lead to 44-43 with 16:35 remaining in the game. Savion Flagg’s 3-pointer with 10:41 to play put the Aggies on top for the first time 52-51. The lead would change hand several times in the remainder of the second half. With 1:51 to play the LSU trailed 79-73. However, three pointers by Marshall Graves and Javonte Smart of LSU tied the game at 79. The two teams would head to overtime tied at 79. In overtime, LSU took an early 82-72 lead on another Smart three. The Tigers would go on to lead the entire overtime period and led by as much as five.
Skylar Mays leads the Tigers in scoring (16.0 ppg). Emmit Williams (13.2 ppg) and Trendon Watford (13.1 ppg) are the next two leading scorers. Mays is hitting 34% of his 3-point shots and 84% of his free throws. LSU is third in the SEC in scoring offense (79.9 ppg) and 11th in the conference in scoring defense (68.6 ppg). However, a Blake Hinson jump shot put the Rebels up 20-19 with 9:18 to go in the first half. Noah Locke’s 3-pointer put the Gators back on top 27-24 with 6:27 to play in the half. Florida would outscore Mizzou 11-2 for the remainder of the half and head to the locker room up 40-28. In the second half Florida continued to control the game and the lead reached 20 at 60-40 with 5:47 remaining in the game. The Gators would cruise on to their 11th win. Johnson led the Gators in scoring with 15 points. KJ Buffen of Ole Miss led all scorers with 20. The Gators out-shot the Rebels 54%-40% from the field. Both teams were limited to just three made 3-point shots. Ole Miss’ 18 turnovers proved costly for the Rebels.
So far this season the Rebels Tyree (17.8 ppg) is the team’s leading scorer. Blake Hinson (11.4 ppg) and guard Devontae Shuler (10.9, ppg) are the Rebel other top scorers. Forward KJ Buffen is the Rebels top rebounder averaging 6.5 boards a game.
Ole Miss is No. 11 in scoring offense (68.8 ppg) in the SEC. They rank 8th in the conference in scoring defense (68.6 ppg). The Rebels are sixth in the SEC in 3-point shooting accuracy (31.7%) and fourth in the conference in 3-point shooting defense (29.3%)).
