“Nine significant contributors on defense, including five projected starters, missed the scrimmage at nearby Ensworth School due to injury.”AuricGoldfinger wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 4:38 pm Some notes from Robbie Weinstein: https://247sports.com/college/vanderbil ... 213787648/
Yeesh. That’s not particularly promising a few weeks out from game 1. It does go on to say that most would’ve likely played in a real game, but still. And mostly hamstring strains. Why the same injury issue for so many defenders?

Re: Sunday scrimmage at Ensworth
Gentry Estes writes...
Given Sunday's mismatch in available first-string talent and experience, Vanderbilt’s offense should have dominated the preseason's first scrimmage. But then it actually went out and did it.
That’s progress, right? I can think of plenty of Vanderbilt offenses in the past that should have done something and didn’t. Just last season, the Commodores scored 105 points in their first two games behind since-transferred quarterback Mike Wright – and still ended the season 111th out of 130 FBS teams in passing offense.
“We had early success,” Lea said, “but once teams kind of were able to overcommit to the box and they made it hard on us, we struggled to get the ball out on the perimeter. ... We found ways to move the ball and to win games, but we want there to be a more explosive nature to what we do.”
It really sounds like Vandy, without Mike Wright and Ray Davis, is going to be putting the ball in the air a lot more and trying to leverage some of that speed at receiver, at least until its inexperienced running backs and tight ends have a chance to develop. If so, it is really going to be a different look for a Clark Lea team.
Tennessean: VU wants a more 'explosive' offense in 2023. So far, so good
