The rising junior hit .337 in his freshman season and .317 in his sophomore season while stealing 79 bases over two seasons. Not a lot of power, though--just 11 HRs and 14 doubles. He has mostly played RF.

That was my initial reaction, too.

I sheepishly admit I’ve never heard of Umass-Lowell.

Good hockey team. Baseball, I have no idea.

We played them a 3 game set here in 2018 (sweep). Corbs (from New England) must be familiar with them.

They are in the America East Conference. Finished 20-35 this year and opened the season against USCe, losing a three game series and being outscored 49-5.

I trust Corbin and meanwhile it turns out Corbin can use the portal to build and fill in voids (stealing bases in this case.)

Those are career numbers. Compare these two players one season at a time:

FRESHMAN ......... AB .. HITS .. 2B ... 3B ... HR .. RBI .. RUNS .. SB ... AVG ... OBP ... SLG
PLAYER A ........ 202 ... 68 .... 6 .... 3 .... 2 ... 23 ... 50 ... 46 .. .337 .. .456 .. .426
PLAYER B ........ 244 ... 82 .... 8 .... 4 .... 1 ... 38 ... 60 ... 47 .. .336 .. .451 .. .414

SOPHOMORE ........ AB .. HITS .. 2B ... 3B ... HR .. RBI .. RUNS .. SB ... AVG ... OBP ... SLG
PLAYER A ........ 218 ... 69 .... 8 .... 5 .... 9 ... 29 ... 57 ... 32 .. .317 .. .421 .. .523
PLAYER B ........ 243 ... 77 ... 10 .... 5 .... 8 ... 36 ... 69 ... 46 .. .317 .. .415 .. .498

Player A is Jacob Humphrey. Player B is Enrique Bradfield Jr. The stats are eerily similar.

The big factor is that EBJ was playing versus mostly top teams in the SEC, early non-conference games and postseason tournaments. Humphrey's best opponents were the 3 games at SC and 3 road games v. ACC teams. And, as you might expect, Vanderbilt played in more games each year.

I'm not expecting Humphrey to win a Gold Glove award or be a first round MLB draft choice next year, but he certainly seems to be a good pickup. Humphrey is fast, as you can see by the SB numbers, so he could be our new center fielder. He started 28 games for Harwich in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer: One at DH, six at 2B and 21 in CF.
