Caution: we're now entering the second big transfer portal season for 2023

Post by BrentVU »

Thus far Vandy has had eight players from the 2022 team depart for the portal... which sounds like a lot, until you realize that that's a lot less than any other SEC team. Having ONLY eight has been a point of pride for this team, which likes to emphasize player development and retention.

But hang on, players can make that decision at any time. Last year we saw a number of players wait until after spring practice to enter the portal... they're dissatisfied with their positions on the depth charts, or whatever. Any ole reason will do.

No, I don't know anything, but it's gotten to the point where fans should just about expect it. I certainly hope the number stays at eight, but I don't expect it to. No news on that front is good news.

Recently Coach Lea talked about the necessity of having an individual chat after apring practice ends with every player on the team, making sure they know where they stand and making sure each one is on board about the ideals he is putting out there for them. It's become a necessity in the current age-- every year, every player kinda has to be recruited all over again.

Malik Langham, who was one of those eight who entered the portal over the winter, announced today he would play at Purdue next season. (He played four years at Vandy and graduated.)

Here are the eight and where they've landed to date:

DL Elijah McAllister - Auburn
RB Ray Davis - Kentucky
QB Mike Wright - Mississippi State
WR Devin Boddie - Wyoming
S Chase Lloyd - FAMU
P Jared Wheatley - ???
DL Malik Langham - Purdue
TE Joel DeCoursey - ???

I believe DeCoursey is playing at Samford and getting an MBA.

Langham was a highly recruited player coming out of high school and actually played one year at Florida before transferring to VU. Although he saw a lot of playing time, the results were not what one would expect from a 4-star. He deserves a lot of credit for hanging in, a good student getting his degree and moving on to Purdue to play his 6th year!
