Not sure why he left the program but we sure could use his bat. He is crushing it for SC.

Probably got tired of sitting behind guys that were inferior hitters.

Too early to say that. Vanderbilt has played 5 games versus ranked opponents. SC has played Umass-Lowell, Winthrop, Queens and Penn. Mario Mendoza could hit those guys.

Casas slash line last year ( .294/.381/.412 ) was similar to that of Parker Noland ( .274/.363/.445 ) … until you see that Casas struck out 19 times in 51 ab to 40 in 146 ab for Noland.

Of course there is much more to it, but the numbers don’t say Casas is a better hitter.

And his transfer might have nothing to do with PT.

I believe that he was playing through injury last year. He is a good hitter, but as someone alluded to above, crushing Penn's third day pitching staff is not a real barometer of his prowess.

I also believe he was suspended for a game along with Little and possibly 1or 2 others last year.

And I see that South Carolina’s 5-0 week didn’t move the team up from its #20 spot on the D1Baseball Top 25 or help SC make it to the BaseballAmerica Top 25.

Excerpt from Keith Law of the Athletic ...

... dated March 14.

Law scouted some pro prospects. He was at the Cambria Classic in Minnesota and later at a South Carolina game versus Bethune-Cookman.

"Gavin Casas — younger brother of American League Rookie of the Year candidate Triston Casas — transferred from Vanderbilt after barely playing for the Commodores the past two years, and has feasted on the Gamecocks’ soft non-conference schedule with nine homers in 17 games after this weekend. ... the concern about (Gavin Casas) at Vandy was that he couldn’t hit good pitching — and he hasn’t faced any so far this year, with just one recorded pitch at 95 mph and nothing higher."

Law included some comments about Enrique Bradfield Jr. and Hunter Owen:

"I think (Owen) can get into the first round if he can show consistent stuff and throw strikes like he did last Friday against LMU and last year in relief."

This was before the shutout of Ole Miss.

Gavin Casas versus Parker Noland

Since I noted earlier in this thread that Casas' huge offensive stats were against weaker opponents, I decided to track Casas versus Noland in SEC games only. So far, it is a push.

Player ... H-AB . 2B . HR . RBI ... R . BB .. K ... AVG ... OBP ... SLG
Casas .... 7-20 .. 2 .. 3 ... 5 .. 10 .. 8 .. 7 .. .350 .. .567 .. .900
Noland .. 11-26 .. 1 .. 4 .. 14 ... 7 .. 4 .. 7 .. .423 .. .500 .. .923

Still not far into the season. I suppose the SC @ Vanderbilt series in mid-April will be very interesting as Gavin Casas bats against guys he faced in practice and scrimmages for two years.

Noland versus Casas after 9 SEC games

Player ... H-AB . 2B . HR . RBI ... R . BB ... K ... AVG ... OBP ... SLG
Casas ... 11-35 .. 2 .. 4 ... 7 .. 12 .. 8 .. 13 .. .314 .. .467 .. .714
Noland .. 14-35 .. 1 .. 5 .. 17 .. 10 .. 7 .. 10 .. .400 .. .500 .. .857

In the Game 1 Win at Mississippi State, Casas was 0-6 with 3 strikeouts, 5 LOB and an Error. But the Cocks won anyway. Casas now has 2 Errors in 7 SEC games at first base (he was DH twice). Noland 0 Errors in 9 SEC games. (He committed all his errors in non-conference games.)

After 12 SEC games for Nolan, 11 SEC games for Casas.

Player ... H-AB . 2B . HR . RBI ... R . BB ... K ... AVG ... OBP ... SLG
Casas ... 11-40 .. 2 .. 4 ... 8 .. 14 . 10 .. 16 .. .275 .. .473 .. .625
Noland .. 15-47 .. 1 .. 5 .. 17 .. 10 .. 8 .. 14 .. .319 .. .418 .. .660

I shouldn't drop this thread just because Parker had a lousy series at Missouri: 1-12 at the plate plus an error. But he certainly bounced back in the Tuesday non-SEC game. Let's see how these two play head-to-head.

They got a bunch from portal including Monte Lee who was Clemson coach until they fired him last year. Point is SC is loaded with new talent on field and in coaches box.

Gavin Casas faltered in the head-to-head competition with Parker Noland at The Hawk. Playing first base in two of the three games (DH in the other), Casas made no errors ... so he bested teammate Talmadge LeCroy by FIVE in that category.

At the plate for the series, Casas was 1-for-11 with a double and a walk. Noland was 1-for-9 with a double and three walks. They each drove in one run and scored two runs.

After 15 SEC games for Nolan, 14 SEC games for Casas.

Player ... H-AB . 2B . HR . RBI ... R . BB ... K ... AVG ... OBP ... SLG
Casas ... 12-51 .. 3 .. 4 ... 9 .. 16 . 12 .. 18 .. .235 .. .426 .. .529
Noland .. 16-56 .. 2 .. 5 .. 18 .. 12 . 11 .. 15 .. .286 .. .403 .. .589

And best of all we won series 2-1 to be solidly in first place East

Casas with a 955 OPS would still put him 4th or 5th on our team this year. And we would have killed for that last season. Guess he just needed a change of scenery.

Or to fatten up his stats against the weak non conference pitching they faced .

Not sure why we care. The kid saw a better opportunity elsewhere, and he took it. Many on this board seemed to be worried that we lost a big fish, and the line certainly was bending early in the year. So now there is some satisfaction in his lack of production. Other than in the series against us, let him be.

They can keep Casas. But I would love to have Petry. That freshman can flat out hit.

A total aside, but what is USC doing playing LeCroy at third? Don’t get me wrong, I greatly appreciated LeCroy’s assistance to Vanderbilt’s cause, but from a Gamecock perspective, WTH are they doing? He’s listed as a catcher. I’d say the third base experiment is a fail, y’all.
