Fontenette is off the board (again); Benson keeps everyone guessing

Vandy fired all of its cannons trying to get Randon Fontenette of Freeport, Texas, but the safety committed to TCU late Friday. Vandy had him in camp last summer and really liked him. He had been committed to Utah earlier, but this commitment is likely to stick.

Deago Benson is the RB from Midlothian, Texas whom Norval McKenzie had been recruiting; within hours of the news breaking that Norval McKenzie was going to Georgia Tech, he had an offer from the Jackets. Where will he end up? I don't know... maybe one of the premium recruiting sites knows (I don't read any of those), but I don't think anyone has any inkling right now. On Friday he tweeted: "I wanna be DIFFERENT n I wanna WIN. #whereishome". OK... what? Wanna be different? Vanderbilt is the school that stands out. Wanna win? Here are the 2022 records of the schools he's interested in:

Kansas State - 10-3
Iowa - 7-5
Boise State - 9-4
Vanderbilt - 5-7
Georgia Tech - 5-7

With four days to go until signing day, and with Ka'Morreun Pimpton going through a ceremonial signing on Thursday, the good news is, I don't think there is particular concern over any of the 19 verbally committed players following through on their pledges. Most of them have indicated that they will be signing on Wednesday.

The only question is whether Vandy will be making any final-week additions to that group. I'll tell you everything I am hearing on Sunday.

The one major piece of the recruiting class we are lacking are DBs. That is such a weakness we need help there. We also need another RB because we literally have 2 on the roster. Another QB would be a good idea too if there's one around that is worth taking.

19, and none that I know of. (Last year you had Jeffrey Ugo defer his signing to February so family from out of the country could attend, but that was highly unusual. You also had some European commits who were slow to get their paperwork in; nothing like that so far this year.)

Nnamdi Odeogu, the edge rusher from Rockville, Md., has committed to Princeton. A very academically oriented young man, he turned down offers from Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Syracuse, and all three service academies to play (and also run track) for the Tigers.

But all may not be lost as far as an edge rusher goes... this 6-2 260 D-lineman portal entry from Temple was reportedly on campus this weekend and drew an offer (means the coaches had a chance to talk with him and look him over)... has two years of eligibility left... the last guy VU got from Temple turned out pretty well... he also has offers so far from Virginia Tech, Colorado, Indiana, Tulane and others.

From what I've heard they are looking to the portal for secondary help. The one name I've heard the most is Alex Washington from Harvard. He's 6'2 and 2 time first team all ivy league the past 2 years.
