I saw your reply on Twitter to the roster breakdown and I wondered what you meant. I kept scrolling and saw the news. Is it possible that we are in the mix for a solid player and needed room? I was never sold on Dorsey from his limited minutes as a FR.

Intriguing. Would love to add another upperclassman guard to next year’s roster!

Maybe they'll get confused by the logo and come here instead.

Wishing Gabe all the best in finding a place he can flourish academically, socially, and athletically. Thanks for being part of the Vandy program.

That is strange, and late. During the UT baseball series I saw him in the gym by himself putting up several jump shots. He even made a few.

Best to him, but maybe we will find someone a little more game-ready.

I did the exact same thing, but holding my breath that it wasn't QMB.

I'm not the expert, but he was a top 3 HS player who went to Memphis. Was supposed to be one and done, but missed some games, and wasn't all that great when he was on the floor.

So he's sort of a high-talent, high drama, low impact player who would bring a lot of expectations, but not necessarily someone who would fit into a team well.

So think Simi Shittu with both a higher ceiling and a lower floor.

What is wrong exactly with Bates?

He had an offer from Duke out of h.s. and several from strong academic state schools.***

*** He's from the Ann Arbor area so we won't get him anyway. He will end up at Michigan.

Not.

Here is Bates at the age of 17...

Bates was never going to be a one-and-done because he re-classified and went to college a year early. The NBA has an age minimum and he simply didn't meet it. So when he signed at Memphis it was for an expected two years. He was obviously a special talent, even at 15 when he was on the cover of SI as the future of the NBA. But he played for his dad, who clearly isn't much of a coach. So he never developed much, got favorable treatment over the other players, and basically just became an inefficient, ball-stopping chucker who didn't work very hard on defense. The NBA guys were clearing hoping that two years with Penny and a bunch of other talents would toughen him up, but that didn't happen.

I'd be really interested to see what a hard-nosed developmentally oriented coach like Stack could do with him. I'm just not sure whether he'd be up for it. I doubt he'd be interested and suspect he wouldn't have the grades (although I could be wrong). Things aren't looking so great for Penny Hardaway either, are they?

Thank you for the extra insight. You definitely had more details about the situation than I had.

I do stand by my bottom line though: High end talent. Low end motor. Questionable teammate. Simi Shittu with a higher ceiling.
