Saturday night's fiasco wasn't about getting out-talented.
The O-line and D-line were both dominant for most of the first half. Lea and Co didn't make that translate into points, then they started trying to get fancy, and it all fell apart.
I was thinking about the offense vs defense balance Spring vs Fall.
In the Spring, they ran simplified versions of the offenses and defenses they were installing - and the offense tore up the defense.
In Fall camp they started implementing more of their schemes. The offense regressed and the defense started to dominate.
Looks to me like the offensive coaches need to keep it simple stupid. There are some decent playmakers. Just don't overthink it, and stick to plays the guys can actually execute.
Defense: you're mostly OK but the DBs need to start playing on the ball. Every successful ETSU pass play, there was a DB in position to make a play... they just didn't look to see the dang ball.
None of this is going to get us ready to beat Georgia or Florida. But it could be good enough to beat Colorado State or UConn.
Some obvious adjustments

Re: Some obvious adjustments
You know, the QB coach has been an OC before.
A little bit of internal staff reshuffling might be in order.
Trying to replace with an outside hire between game 1 and 2 might be a little bit disruptive.

Simplify yes. Concentrate on the plays your unit executes well.
We ran three WR screens - the simple quick out where one WR blocks for the other. It's a high percentage play that usually nets 5 easy yards and sometimes can hit big. We couldn't even complete this pass for no gain and on two attempts it was nearly disaster.
That alone says to me that we haven't worked on this play enough and that we've probably got the offense doing a little of everything and haven't mastered anything.
Raih's a new coordinator - and maybe he'll grow into it, but if he doesn't, I agree with above - Lea should turn the offense over to the qb coach. BTW - Raih was not present for the spring game. He had a death in the family or something. It was, in fact, the qb coach calling the plays and the offense looked terrific- especially for a spring game when offenses always look disjointed.
