We should get a depth chart today... but it probably won't mean much

Post by BrentVU »

The first game-week press conference of the season usually coincides with the release of a depth chart. But for the last few years, these releases have been mostly meaningless. If the coaches preferred not to reveal an actual starter, they might show three players at a certain position and list them as "OR".

What it does do sometimes is reveal how the players are being grouped at certain positions. (For instance, does it list four starters on the defensive line and three linebackers, or vice versa?) We'll see what the Lea staff chooses to do about releasing a depth chart. I think we're already pretty sure Lea is not going to name a QB starter, although it seems pretty certain at this point anyway that it will be Seals.

The important thing is that they utilize the talent of both playmaking QBs the best they can.

It is interesting that there is only 1 of those "or" situations for starting positions (Owusu & Wright @ LB). It looks like this might be a pretty legitimate initial depth chart.

Yes, it looks as though the staff may be a lot more transparent this year, and that's great for us fans! Ken Seals definitely beats out Mike Wright. Will Sheppard earns a starting spot. Nate Clifton wins a spot at defensive end. And Jaylen Mahoney and Gabe Jeudy-Lally win corner spots.

Bulovas (as most expected) will be the kicker, and surehanded Cam Johnson will field 'em.
