I was pretty sure it's 3, but one of those can be a redshirt year or an injury year (like Dansby).

My understanding is that it's 3 years out of high school. Might even be age driven - 21.

That is correct. It is three years out of high school (which includes redshirt years), but if the player turns 21 before that he cane then declare. That is an unusual case, however. Much more usual to include a redshirt year.

... that an older player can be eligible earlier. I don't know the specifics, but age 21 on draft day makes sense. (I wonder if BYU players who are allowed an extra year for missions cannot leave until age 22.)

Will Toffey is one recent example. Toffey turned 21 on 12/31/15 and was drafted in June 2016 by the Baltimore Orioles (round 25). Despite playing well in the field (started 61 of 62 games with a .947 fielding pct. at 3B), Toffey did not hit well in 2016 (.227 / .266 / .387). Toff returned for a fantastic junior season (.354 / .602 / .475) and earned a big bonus by being drafted in round 4 by Oakland. And he is on a faster track, starting in low Class A then in 2018 playing high A and AA. A trade to the Mets was in there, too, but I don't know the details.

Which among our current sophomores fall into this graybeard category?

Pat DeMarco will be draft-eligible.
