Local paper says VU commit Tate Hamby should put OCS in contention for state championship

Post by BrentVU »

The Ouachita Citizen newspaper's preview of Ouachita Christian School (Monroe, La.) has a great photo and good words about Vandy commit Tate Hamby; the Eagles open Sept. 1 in an interstate game vs. Dallas Christian...

OCS was frightening before, but this football team might be the scariest it’s ever been under [head coach Steven] Fitzhugh.

The man whose name is on the turf and has six state championships on his resume has the most college football prospects he’s ever had on one team. Four players held college football offers over the summer (Tate Hamby, Ryder Bentley, Ben Devall and Noah Lovelady). Hamby committed to Vanderbilt during the summer, and if he stays with that commitment, he would become the first Eagle to play for an SEC school since Keith Alexander (Mississippi State, 2006)...

White could be argued as being one of the best athletes on the team, while fellow senior Hamby could be viewed as one of the greatest athletes in the entire area. Hamby recorded 826 receiving yards and eight touchdown receptions on 53 catches in 2022. On top of that, Hamby led OCS in kick return yards with 514 yards and a score on 21 returns to go along with his 402 punt return yards and four touchdowns (on 11 returns).

“Look at what he did in football, watch him on the basketball court and look at what he does in track,” Fitzhugh said. “No doubt he’s one of the most gifted players in Northeast Louisiana. It’s going to be tough on DBs to match up with him. It makes defenses adjust to him, and if you (bracket him), that will open up things for other players.”

Hamby will also play DB and return kicks for the Eagles, who had a 14-1 record last season.
