Commitment (2024): Alvin Williamson, Jr., 6-1 180 DB Cibolo-Steele, TX

Post by BrentVU »

Visited last weekend, liked what he saw, committed to Coach Lea Tuesday morning, over offers from Oregon State, Texas Tech, Tulane, Army, Navy, and others... he is commitment No. 16 for 2024.

Cornerback has been a continuing need for Clark Lea, and it will continue to be a big question mark going into his third season. Vandy now has three guys committed who probably project as corners, so I would suggest they have addressed the need for the 2024 class. Those guys, all of whom committed this month, are:

Guylijah Theodule, 6-3 167, Miami-Northwestern, FL
Jaren Sensabaugh, 6-0 170, Knoxville-Catholic -> Nashville-Ensworth, TN
Alvin Williamson, Jr., 6-0 180, Cibolo-Steele, TX

That's the crazy thing about this time we're in... Vandy has no idea how many it can or should sign (except that the yearly limit is supposedly 25). Players who played in 2020 can come back for a fifth year (that season didn't count against anyone's eligibility); the same is true for fourth-year players who have redshirted. How many will move on, and how many will stay? Usually, those decisions don't get made until after the season. On top of that, some underclassmen will undoubtedly unexpectedly jump into the portal, opening up more slots.

About all a team's general manager can do at this point is make a wild guess as to what they think might happen. Obviously, you want to use every last one of your 85 scholarships to bring in the most talent you can. But you also don't want to oversign and tell a signee at the last minute that he will have to greyshirt (defer enrollment to the spring)... that happened with one Vandy signee in 2022, and he withdrew and enrolled at MTSU.

With 16 commitments now for 2024, we've reached the point where Vandy may have to be judicious and tell some prospects no, we're full at your position group.
