Hubris?
In the top of the 1st, the UT 3rd base coach had a runner tag up for home on a very short, very high fly to LF; easily gunned down at home, not even close enough for a slide. The Stanford pitcher is coming off his 156 pitch game in the Supers and his pitches did not have much movement in the 1st; UT hitting him. Really bad decision to send the runner into an inning-ending 7-2 DP. Stanford now up on Dollander 2-0, still hitting in bottom of 1st.

Dollander isn't very sharp today, and since the 1st, UT hitters look a bit befuddled by scrawny (but very good) Stanford pitcher.

Zoolander left down 4-0 after three. If Stanford finishes the deal he will finish the season a pedestrian 7-7 for the season.

Vols have figured the skinny guy out. Bunch of singles, a walk and a sac fly have chased him with 2 outs and the bases loaded in top 5th, tied 4-4. Yikes!

Stanford coach made a Corbs like decision to leave his pitcher in way too long - now they will lose for sure.

They had a guy in the bullpen ready when the score was 4-1. The Stanford coach much have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed to leave the pitcher in that long when he was fading out. The starter had clearly lost it in the 5th, and to UT's credit by that point, they just hit the pitches thrown but didn't try to kill them. Stanford skipper must've had visions of another 156 pitch masterpiece to save his staff for the run thru the loser bracket. Tenn advances, but their three best pitchers are done for this week. If they manage to beat LSU and/or Wake three times in the next 3 days with depleted pitching, then you gotta tip the cap to 'em.

I certainly was not rooting for Tennessee and was glad to see the play called as it was ... however, I didn't understand why Denton could not run to first base.
TWO OUTS, Bases loaded. Denton swings and misses, the ball gets away from the catcher, and a runner from third crosses the plate.
Doesn't the defense have to make a play? Tag the runner or tag the batter or throw to first base for the out?
My understanding is that the batter is automatically out only if there is a runner on first base with less than two out (rationale is much like the Infield Fly Rule in which defense could drop the ball on purpose and start a double play).
And if the runner touches home plate before a play is made at first base is that considered a force-out in which the run doesn't count?
In this case, the umpire called the batter out and there was no play. The ball was definitely not held by the catcher.
