Not all 100% as it happened in real life but close enough. Hollywood likes to embellish.
Even though they didn’t win it all, they had a hell of a team. Rupp’s Runts were 27-2 that year, and had Riley and Dampier. This was my freshman year at Vandy, and they breezed through the SEC schedule. Taking nothing away from the Texas Western team, who was the better team that night, I think the Cats might have come out the winner in a best of 3 playoff. We’ll never know.
Pat Riley said TWC was the better team period. Maybe he was just being a good sport, but he did say it.

TWC played #4 Iowa, #7 Cincinnati, #3 Kansas, and #1 ranked UK that season and beat all of them. Pretty convincing.
Yes, that it is a pretty impressive list of W's. I assume those are tourney seeds and not national rankings. That is, I assume for example that Iowa was the #4 seed in the tourney, not the #4 ranked team in the country? But still impressive.

Iowa was 6-0 and ranked #4 in the AP Top 10 Poll when it lost at UTEP on Dec. 30, 1965. It’s coach, the legendary Ralph Miller.

The rankings of the other teams mentioned were also AP since they were among those in the 22-team NCAAT.

There was no 7-seed, for example, in those days. Only one team from a conference qualified and not all conferences were represented. A year earlier, Vanderbilt was a “Sweet Sixteen” team by virtue of winning the SEC.

UTEP also topped Oklahoma City, coached by Abe Lemons, which had been 24-4 but had not cracked the Top 10; and previously 23-7 Utah whose star Jerry Chambers led all scorers in the NCAAT.

Unlike the movie which portrayed the win over Iowa as a come from behind struggle, the Miners blew them out.

Don Haskins was a former Hank Iba player and guys like Nolan Richardson and Tim Floyd were former Haskins players or coaches. Iba had 751 wins. Haskins had 719 wins as a coach himself.

Best acting in the movie? Jon Voight as grumpy old Adolph Rupp.
