Honestly, this was an eye roll post for me (sorry commadore). People have been complaining about the lazy shiftless younger generation literally since the time of Aristotle (seriously, you can look it up and find the quotes from Aristotle).

What was Aristotle's take on NIL and the portal?
I don't know. What's the Greek word for "suck"?

Oh good. I can drive over and harass the hell out of him during games. Just a 35 minute drive and I have friends who can get me tickets.

Bruce Pearl.....whoring kids in financially fragile situations is one way of going through life.

I'm sure no illegal contact happened.

The question have is why would Rockhurst spend $300,000,000 to further pamper unsuccessful athletes that only leave the minute they reach any level of success. The whole thing is broken. Count me out when it comes to this crazy new system.

And to think there are some who actually would want him as VU’s coach…

Not sure if this has already been posted but this is an interesting article that lays out potential suitors. Any defection to a SEC team would be a nightmare scenario for Vandy. I like the return to Vandy option but that does not seem to be realistic:

VU definitely has to deal with this NIL crap. It is a major part of getting and keeping the attention of young men in an immediate gratification world.

Yeah, I'm an old curmudgeon too, but I think even you and I would not be likely to stay in a job if we had an offer to do the same work for dramatically more pay somewhere else. This is not a bizarre character flaw unheard of before NIL.
The only thing that's new is that college athletes now have the same freedoms that the rest of us have always enjoyed. It may not be good for college sports - but you can hardly blame today's athletes as a morally bankrupt generation.

So what I'm hearing you say is:

1. Tyrin Lawrence is unwilling to work hard on his game. He's just lazy.

2. Moving to a higher paying job so he can support his family is a character flaw. Only lazy people do this.

Seriously?
College sports fans have been enjoying a multi billion dollar entertainment industry for years. The workers in this industry were paid vastly less than their market value and their choices were restricted in ways that are extremely unusual for any other value producing workforce.
This arrangement made things nice for fans, the schools, the TV networks, and the coaches.
Now that the arrangements are changing and the players have the same freedoms most of us already enjoy, we suddenly think they're a morally flawed generation.

Yes, there is some entitlement here. But I'm not sure it's located where you think it is.

I don’t think those comments had to do with Tyrin. They DO apply to some others who saw an easier path somewhere else, however. And it is certainly true in the workplace. I think Shelby didn’t have the patience to develop and wait his turn, for one thing.

Where I disagree on this is going to college is not a job, it's an education. It went all downhill when student athletes started getting paid in addition to a FREE education millions of people actually have to pay for. Even in the Pros you can't just leave and go wherever you want initially you get drafted and are under contract. You can leave when that contract is up.

The dumbest thing ever done was NIL as it makes no sense. If players wanted to get paid they could go to Europe or some other avenue. Once they opened the door it became the demise of college sports

Well ... one correction.

The dumbest thing ever done was the NCAA deciding it was OK for *them* to get paid for the athlete's NIL, but not for the athletes.

If the NCAA never licensed out players names and pictures for freaking video games, they would have been able to still argue amateurism rules in court ... but once the NCAA decided the players were a product, it's hard to argue the players can't have benefits beyond the basketball court when the NCAA is enjoying benefits beyond the basketball court.

Yeah, taking all your money and giving it to me is a wonderful idea. That is the definition of liberalism/socialism.

No, NIL is... giving somebody all the money...you buy tickets to a ballgame they end up having to give it to a 19 year old so he won't bolt and go to another school to play ball. The money you pay for goods and services from some company and then they turn around and give it to some 19 year old jock so he won't leave for another team or two or three.

That shouldn't rile up the conservatives on the other board unless they (erroneously) equate the liberalism Aristotle referenced to the "liberalism" of our political Left.

A multi-kabillion $ entertainment industry says no, you're wrong, it's a business.

Beer companies and truck companies don't pay the equivalent of a small country's GDP for advertising on the nationwide broadcast of your favorite college students taking tests or writing term papers.

If a Vanderbilt student working a part time job through school got a better offer for a higher paying part time job while finishing his or her degree at a different school, you wouldn't blink an eye. Nor would you say they're lazy or morally bankrupt or they don't care about their education.

Unless the job they're using to work through their degree is playing sports for your entertainment. In which case it's a Crime Against Humanity.

Look, I don't like it either. It's certainly not good for Vanderbilt sports and maybe not good for college sports in general. But styling this as some kind of moral collapse or casting aspersions on the players' character is just preposterous. The moral high ground you think you're standing on is a pretense and has been for decades.

So what you're bemoaning here is that the goodies you want are going to someone else who is willing and able to pay more than you.

If you're a socialist, I guess you could try to craft some argument about how you deserve the goodies more than they do, and the goodies should be granted to you at a regulated price.

But if you claim to be a capitalist, you've tied yourself hopelessly in knots. The best goodies go to those who pay the most is the very definition of capitalism.
