A tradition unlike any other...the official VandyMania pick 'em is back

Here’s how it works. (The same way it's worked every year, since we started doing this here back in the Seventies.) Each week I post a handful of games for your prognosticating pleasure. This includes the VU game along with a few others of interest as selected by me. Your job is to pick the winner and the final score of each game. The poster who picks the winner and comes closest to the final score gets his or her name highlighted in the following week’s pick ‘em thread.

There’s also the Upset of the Week pick. Simply pick the underdog you think will overcome the biggest point spread to win outright that week. You need not predict a score. The underdog winning against the biggest spread gets the Upset of the Week. Ties are not broken. You can pick as many upsets as you like, but only the one you designate as Upset of the Week will be recognized.

There’s no material prize for winning, except for being able to peacock and see your name in lights. I have the final say over winners, but if you think I’ve screwed up, let me know—I’ll fix it.

The thread will typically be locked around 11 AM CT on Saturdays.

Let’s see if last year’s overall champions, BrentVU and VUinFL, can successfully defend their titles.

Because of the very limited number of Week 0 games, we're going to focus all our attention on what happens in Honolulu.

I feel like I need my head examined for thinking we can score this many points. Hawaii lost a lot of players from a challenged defense. But the real question is will we open things up - or test the middle for the first half, keeping Hawaii in the game. Our lack of pass rush scares me against an air raid - and I expect Hawaii to hit some long balls. But I also expect us to score a defensive TD. Their qb is inexperienced, and we should be swarming. Hopefully he will force a few throws into tight windows.

Hope always springs eternal. I know we want to establish the run identity. Hawaii was quite challenged against the pass last year. Making play action work decides this one. First play should be a fake up the middle, jet sweep. Use the whole field.
