Re: Rodney Chatman
Good addition to the roster. Experienced and only uses the scholarship for a year in what unexpectedly became a position of high need in the last few weeks. Should fill Max’s role well.
Would be great to see a true upperclassman PG added soon in case Pippen doesn’t return. Tricky sell though, unless the staff can tell them behind the scenes that they know they won’t be competing with Pippen for minutes.

Re: Rodney Chatman
If he really is that good defensively then I’d assume he will be starting as the 2

Re: Rodney Chatman
He was a starter on a team that went 29-2 and ended up #3 in the nation.
Must be good at something.

Re: Rodney Chatman
I saw a couple of Dayton fans raving about his defense online yesterday. That's a good sign.

Re: Rodney Chatman
He had a very tough season this past year - I would assume that his forte is defense as he is not going to be a great offensive player I would guess, as he took a relatively low percentage of shots while he was on the court, and was not that efficient with them.
Probably a slightly shorter version of Max Evans. Not likely a great improvement, but will probably be as good.

Re: Rodney Chatman
Very similar stats, similar shooting pct. Chatman more assists but played on better team. Chatman consistently more steals, better career FT shooter, more TO’s than Max. Loved Max, but Dayton fans seem equally fond of Chatman, prob pretty even switch.

Re: Rodney Chatman
Maybe he didn't score much because of this quote:
" Chatman is known as a defensive combo guard and struggled through a right hand injury that required surgery in 2020-21, averaging 7.9 points per game, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals in 12 games."

Re: Rodney Chatman
The 247sports article didn't say anything about Chatman's stats. ESPN has more:
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... ey-chatman
The Game Log shows that he missed about a dozen games mid-season and also the Memphis NIT game. The Dayton Flyers game story indicated only that Chatman was injured.

Re: Rodney Chatman
I was taking that into account and looked at his 2020 season numbers - His offensive efficiency was somewhat lower than Evans' was this season, on a slightly lower percentage of shots (Evans didn't shoot the ball very much for a off guard but Chatman actually shot the ball less often as a junior, just 16.5% of the team's shots while he was on the floor, basically the 5th option of the starters), his assist rate is higher, which suggests he can play PG if needed, something Evans was not able to do, but his TO rate was also higher (to be fair a likely by product of playing some point, though still high for a non-freshman who isn't the primary ballhandler). He shot the ball well from three as a JR, but is a career 31.5% shooter from deep.
I think he will probably be fine as a replacement for Evans, but don't expect a significant upgrade in terms of a player who will carry a significant offensive load. Could be more versatile as well by providing an extra option at point, but will be a pretty major dropoff from Pippen so only should be used there in a pinch.
