Kyle Wright Wins #20

Post by Levon »

He's 20-5 on the season. Wins don't mean what they used to, but it's still a nice accomplishment.

It’s quite the milestone in today’s Baseball for a pitcher to win 20 games when you consider how specialized pitching has become. Most pitchers rarely go more than 6 innings unless they are in a zone, so wins are more dependent on relievers to keep the score in check.
Kyle has paid his dues in getting to the Majors. He has become a reliable arm. I’m especially happy he’s a Brave! If Atlanta gets back to the World Series, it will have been because Kyle shined in the postseason.

Not if you listen to the pundits. On espn the other day they listed their top 5 NL candidates and Wright wasn't on the list. Crazy.

Wins for a starter mean more than they used to mean because starters go fewer innings. More difficult for a starter to get a win. 20 wins is a major accomplishment Next closest are Urias and Verlander with 17.

Just a note about the changes that have occurred, in my lifetime, in the pitching world. To say that things are different now than they were, say, 40 years ago is an understatement. To quote stats from a couple of guys who pitched when I first became a fan – Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan:

Carlton pitched for 24 years and won 329 games (many of those years on a crappy Phillies team). His overall record was 329-244, which is really good, but the stats I want to focus on are durability and how he was used. In his career he threw 5217 innings, including 254 complete games. In one year, 1977, he completed almost half of the games he started (36 starts, 17 complete games). He pitched 283 innings that year.

Ryan pitched for 27 years and was 324-282. For his career he pitched 5386 innings, including 222 complete games. In 1974 he pitched an incredible 352 innings, and 26 complete games.

Amazing as those numbers are, they pale in comparison to baseball as it was in the late 19th century. It was a game then when the players were treated almost like pack animals, apparently. When listening to a Braves game on the radio the other day they mentioned a Boston Braves pitcher by the name of Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn. He’s in the Hall of Fame, with 310 wins in a career that spanned 11 seasons. In one unwordly year, 1884, he started 75 games, completing 73, and winning 60. And the season was only 112 games long. During that year he pitched 678 innings. This one guy pitched over 70% of his team’s innings in 1884. Yes, things have surely changed.

What the experts think. Crazy in my opinion.

This one even has Max Fried ahead of Wright.

And Swanson's 24th home run got him the win.
