Unfortunately ...

... Will has been outrighted to AAA Lehigh Valley after the two games in Toronto. I guess he is out of options, because this time it also took him off the 40-man roster.

Good news, I believe, is that another team could pick him up after the season in a Rule 5 draft if they thought he filled a gap. I don't know that will happen. The Phillies other third basemen are not that good, however.

The primary starter, Alec Bohm (currently nursing a pinkie finger injury), has a slash line of .273/.307/.385 with a .958 fielding pct. Last year, Bohm's fielding pct. at third was a dismal .936.

Bohm is a right-handed batter, as are the two guys who have taken his place the past three games -- Matt Vierling and Yairo Munoz. Those two combined for 1-10 with a single, 0 walks and 5 strikeouts the past 3 games ... batting against right-handed pitchers. In my opinion, the Phillies missed an opportunity to give left-hander Toffey a few swings of the bat.

Or in his case, a few chances to stroll to first with a free pass. One of Will's strengths is drawing walks. You may recall that Toffey's batting average and power numbers were pitiful in his sophomore season at Vanderbilt (.227 / 0 HR in 203 AB). But he drew a lot of walks (51) for a .387 on-base percentage.

Will has always been a good fielder, but I don't have his Vanderbilt fielding stats at my fingertips (he may have played first or second a few games in addition to his regular third base gig). His numbers didn't look good at the Cape or in the low minors, but his fielding has really been strong of late. In 50 AAA starts this season, Will has made only 2 errors and sports a .984 fielding percentage.

I wish him luck with the Phillies or elsewhere.

That stinks. I feel like I'm reading about Moonlight Graham. I hope he gets another chance.

Spot on. I assumed he would be sent back down as soon as the Phillies' injury situation cleared up. I was really hoping he would get a chance to play.

Apparently 4 Phillies, including their 3B, couldn’t travel to Toronto because they aren't vaccinated. I guess they called up Toffey just for that series.

He should at least get the minimum major league money for 2 games: $8,642

PS: Did you hear that MLB settled a class-action lawsuit over the fact that they didn't pay minor leaguers during spring training? Only $185 million. 2-4 weeks a year for close to 1,000 players over the last 120 or so years should be worth at least $200 million. (BTW: The lawyers got $55.5 million of the settlement funds)

"... an attorney representing MLB ... had suggested that the minor-league players, though unpaid during those periods, were receiving more than $2,000 a week in value per week based on what amateurs pay for training."

Next thing you know, collegiate athletes will want to get paid more than just the cost of tuition, fees, room and board.
