I don't know the reason for listing nominees. It's not like baseball-reference.com is going to list GG-3rd or GG-2nd next to a guy's name. Since everyone gets a trophy these days, they should nominate a position player who started at least 100 games.

Was there a list of 3 finalists last season? If so, Dansby should have been on there with only two errors while starting every game. His .991 fielding percentage far outpaced Gold Glove winner Javier Baez (56 starts, 8 errors, .968 fldg. pct.).

If you want to get into modern statistics, Dansby in 2020 was no. 2 among ALL major league players in Defensive Wins Against Replacement with 1.3 dWAR. Only $35 million third baseman Nolan Arenado (1.4) came in with a higher dWAR rating. Baez was at 0.9.

Baez topped the National League in Range Factor (4.33) and Dansby was fourth at 3.77. However, the formula is a simplistic (Putouts+Assists)/Games Played. It doesn't take into consideration a teams' pitchers' tendency to give up grounders versus fly balls and strikeouts.

I should suppose the voters saw enough of each fielder to base their judgment on more than just statistics.
