From Johnson City, Tennessee

Post by bornadore57 »

Apparently, three Vandy players are on the roster and playing for the Johnson City (Tennessee) Doughboys in a first-year wooden bat league for developing college players. Johnson City is 13 and 24, 11-1/2 games out of first place after last nights win over the Kingsport (Tennessee) Road Warriors (an interesting story in their own rights). From reports of that game...

...Doughboys' starter Donye Evans held the Road Warriors to two hits and one run over four innings. He struck out two, walked three, and hit two batters. The six-foot, six-inch Evans pitched in eight games for Vanderbilt this year, including one in the College World Series. Evans' college teammate, catcher Alan Espinal, threw out two would-be base stealers. Espinal's only hit in his freshman year at Vanderbilt was a home run. Another Vandy product, outfielder Troy LaNeve, went two for five with four RBI's and hit a 439-foot home run to left-center field. Troy hit six home runs at Vandy this year.

In 8.2 innings pitched, Evans has struck out 10 and walked six. Teams are batting .143 against him.

Espinal is struggling to hit, having struck out in 14 of his 27 at-bats.

LaNeve is hitting .296 in eight games.
