Value of a good catcher like C.J. is invaluable

It will be sad losing C.J. The plays he made as catcher were incredible. Several times his throws to second to catch runners trying to steal were perfect and the opposing team’s runners were dumbfounded that the second baseman or shortstop had the ball before they even started sliding.

I was at the Nashville Sounds game last Saturday and saw the value of a good catcher. Unfortunately the Sounds didn’t have one.

Now granted this is only one game and the guy may have just had a bad game, but the catcher was atrocious in that game. The Sounds lost to the Louisville Bats (the Cincinnati Reds’ AAA team) 12-0 and baserunning was a big part of the Louisville win.

Also I think the Brewers called up several of the Sounds after the all-star break. The Sounds are playing with several guys who just came up from AA. The Sounds have been good this year.

The Sounds catcher had several passed balls, leading to a couple of runners scoring from third. His throws to second to get runners trying to steal were never on target. The Bats stole at will in the game against the Sounds. At one point, the Bats had runners on first and third, the Sounds catcher threw it to first because the runner had too big of a lead, the throw went into right field, the runner in third scored and the guy on first went to third.

I hope this catcher adjusts to the AAA game and gets better. If he wants to get to the majors he’s going to have to.

The Sounds could use a catcher like C.J.

CJ is the best defensive catcher we've ever had. Not only did he eliminate the run game, he was a MLB caliber receiver behind the plate. There was a stretch in the middle of the season when he was the toughest out in the lineup. He had a couple of really bad streaks at the plate, but he has a professional approach, and he'll hit moving up.

CJ rarely strikes out and always hits the ball on the nose. His problem this year was it kept going right at people. They will start falling eventually.

CJ signed for $400,000 which was $69,900 OVER slot value. In a year that most are below slot value, it is impressive that the Vandy Boys are coming in well over.
