Our 2, 3, and 4 hitters were...

1-26 in the last two games against the gators. I move we move them down to 7, 8, and 9 and let them think about that. Also, 9 Ks.

Who should bat in the #2 slot?

C.J. Rodriguez.

You want a guy who makes contact and gets on base (more walks and hits, fewer strikeouts). Young leads the team in strikeouts, while C.J. has the fewest strikeouts among regulars and is second to Bradfield in bases on balls. In SEC play only, the worst K guys on the team are Gonzalez, Keegan, Noland and Young.

I believe even today's Analytics guys will agree with the long-held theory of the #3 batter being the best overall hitter in terms of a combination of power, On-Base Percentage and speed. That would be Isaiah Thomas. In MLB terms, a Mickey Mantle type.

#4, a Roger Maris (1960-1962 Yankees) type, would be a power hitter with decent OBP. That could be Bulger or Kolwyck (limited SEC stats). They could be 4/5 or 5/4.

THEN you get to a guy like Carter Young who has a low batting average and strikes out a lot but leads the team in home runs. Think Dave Kingman.

VU SEC STATS THROUGH 21 GAMES (2021 season)

PLAYER ...... PA ... SLG ... OBP ... SO ... SO%
Bradfield .. 100 .. .413 .. .454 ... 11 .. .110
Rodriguez ... 89 .. .486 .. .416 .... 8 .. .090
Thomas ...... 66 .. .576 .. .369 ... 16 .. .242
Kolwyck ..... 24 .. .696 .. .375 .... 5 .. .208
Bulger ...... 80 .. .486 .. .354 ... 23 .. .288
Young ....... 99 .. .505 .. .283 ... 32 .. .323
Keegan ...... 88 .. .372 .. .330 ... 30 .. .341
Noland ...... 92 .. .432 .. .311 ... 31 .. .337
Gonzalez .... 83 .. .479 .. .354 ... 31 .. .373

Jones ....... 34 .. .364 .. .353 ... 14 .. .412
Davis ....... 64 .. .231 .. .293 ... 12 .. .188
Romero (all)* 52 .. .619 .. .442 ... 16 .. .308

*Only 4 SEC plate appearances, so I listed stats for all games. Strikeouts about middle of the pack for our team, but otherwise quite impressive. I would like to see Romero at DH.

Of course, the coaches know better than I how the players are expected to fare.

I was thinking maybe CJ also. And maybe time for IT to hit third again. Problem there is CJ clogs the bases.....Real problem is that everybody strikes out way too much. First world problems...life is good.

I certainly would not be surprised to see a change in the batting order this week.

That is why I said Thomas. Good speed followed by a solid bat.

Well ...

... we HAVE gotten the occasional double steal with Bradfield and Carter. Bradfield and Thomas could do likewise.

I don't consider C.J. to be slow. He has as many steals as Cooper Davis (1) and has not been caught stealing.
