Vandy at Missouri, 2/2/23, 8:00 (SEC Network)

Post by MikeADore »

Missouri (3-6) has struggled of late after getting off to a 3-0 start that included a win at Alabama. They’ve now lost six in a row, but the biggest reason is who they’ve played, including LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina and at Georgia. The most disappointing performance was their last one, a 77-54 loss at Kentucky. No doubt they’re looking to get back on track against Vandy after six straight losses.

They have a bunch of players between 5’10 and 6’1 including senior Hayley Frank who leads them in most major categories. They do have a 6’3 junior named Jayla Kelly who plays about 13 minutes per game. And, they have a player with my favorite name in the league: Mama Dembele. She’s a quick little point guard who is a good player.

They’ve always been known as a three-point shooting team, and this year is no different. They’re shooting 34.2 percent, which puts them one spot behind third-place Vandy, which hits 34.3 percent. They’ve shot 482 threes compared to Vandy’s 405.

On the NET site’s Winner Prediction function, Missouri is favored by 12 points with an 84 percent probability of victory. Sounds about right.

Need someone else to set up on offense. Ciaja has all of the only 7 points they have scored thus far. Not a good start.

I don't see how a 21-5 run in the 1st can be blamed on injuries.

Yikes. I’m guessing Missouri might just end their six-game losing streak tonight. Sigh.

Well, you are depending on players who wouldn't be starting to take on bigger roles than they are equipped to handle.

Coach Sheas defensive plan is not working tonight. Need to back off the press and try something different.

Well damn. Getting blown off the court was not really what I thought would happen. Didn’t expect a win but thought maybe it would be competitive…

Too many missed free throws and 2 footers. And Mizzou handled our pressure all too well.

This was the first game where I felt Coach Ralph, who I adore, didn’t choose the best path for the team. The scrambling, pressure defense wasn’t effective, and Missouri was getting too many open, makeable shots, both layups and three-pointers. And that kind of effort probably fatigues our players, who are few in number, on the offensive end. I would have liked to see some adjustments or a different approach after Mizzou shredded our defense early.
