Big OT from Florida plans OV; decent chance for a commitment

Post by BrentVU »

Devin Vass, a 6-6 270 OT from Bartow, FL (Lakeland HS), says he is visiting Vandy officially this weekend; I'd say the chances of him committing to Coach Blazek and the "Grease Gang" on his OV are pretty good. Offers: Vandy, Appalachian State, South Florida, Eastern Kentucky.

Vandy hasn't had a commitment in almost two months. Most assistant coaches were out recruiting this past week.

That’s a top big public high school program. UF has had as many as 5 commits from Lakeland HS in a single class on a couple of occasions.

Love to get the guy. But, wish we could get some big, agile, hostile, DT's / NT's in this class too.

Maybe this is a start with big guys - we sure need them.

Glad to see he is a big guy but hopefully he has been overlooked to being just 270 lbs. His offers of Vandy, Appalachian State, South Florida, and Eastern Kentucky are not too impressive. Surely there are some higher-ranked teams offering. Can we add 30-35 lbs?

Well, here's the deal on that. For schools like Vandy, once they spot a guy like Vass who they think will work for their needs, a big part of it is jumping on him before other big boys do, and before his recruiting blows up. If Vandy can form a relationship with a guy early and get a pledge, they have a chance. But if offers from big schools start pouring in, the chances of holding him decrease.

And Vass is a great example. He visited Vandy and Vandy was evidently unable to close the deal with him on his OV (which is fine, he could think it over and still commit later). But now, a day later, he has new offers from Missouri and Maryland to consider... so the chances of landing a commitment just went down a bit.

Some may have presumed/assumed that because Vass didn't have Power 5 offers that he might not be worthy of a Vandy offer... a day later, he has two more.

Lakeland HS's roster this year is ridiculous...they have 15+ FBS level recruits
