Honolulu: Report on Hawaii's preseason camp

Post by BrentVU »

Hawaii has a new head coach and staff. From Hawaii News Now:

Under first year defensive coordinator Jacob Yoro, the boys in the green practice jerseys are flying around, getting more acclimated to the system being installed during camp.

“Overall, I think we’re all getting pretty comfortable with the defense, everyone’s honing in to their assignment and what they got to do on the field.” UH linebacker Isaiah Tufaga said. “I think that’s the most important part, getting comfortable with the defense and trusting each other so that we can all play as one.”

When asked to describe their scheme, one word keeps coming up — physical.

Playing complementary defense, so everyone is on the same page.

“We do everything together.” [DB Virdel] Edwards said. “We tackle together, we vice (tackle) together, we always have help, whatever we play, we always have help, so just playing together, knowing where your help is and just playing by your rules.”

While also making sure they bring it against the UH offense as kick-off against Vanderbilt inches closer.

Here are two videos on Clarence T.C. Ching Stadium, the site of the Vandy-Hawaii opener. The improvements for football were completed in May 2021. Additional improvements were supposed to increase the stadium size to around 22,000 by the 2022 opener, but those enhancements were delayed by Covid.

The first video shows the original renderings by the architect, and the second is a time-lapse of the stadium as it was retrofitted into a 9,000-seat stadium suitable (?) for NCAA football. The complex was originally intended for soccer, track and field and beach volleyball. Note that the bleachers they erected are actually INSIDE the track, so if you are sitting in those bleachers you are VERY close to the field.
