Paige was a relatively late commitment and was lightly recruited until late in the season. He played WR at Beech HS and was expected to move to TE at Vandy.

I recall speculation he was to grayshirt. I wonder if that played into his decision.

He is a really good basketball player. Could he be looking at basketball offers?

This is regrettable, but you can’t blame him too much. When you accept a grayshirt offer, the coach says, “There’s a great chance we’ll be able to get you on the roster this fall; somebody is almost sure to leave and open up a scholarship. If not, we’ll enroll you in January.” Both the player and the coach are taking a gamble.
Paige is a phenomenal athlete and he may become an outstanding player. But one bright side for Vanderbilt: the 85-scholarship roster is completely filled out, and there hasn’t been much unexpected attrition since signing day (only two departures that I know of).

Ya know, that Garrison Mathews guy from Franklin, now with the NBA Houston Rockets, was a good football player in high school and surprised some people when he signed with DLU for basketball out of high school. It worked out better than pretty good. Maybe Paige should go hoops. Even if it's a mid-major.
