Prediction: At least one “powerhouse” football team will have a meltdown because of NIL this year
I’m predicting that at least one of the major college football programs expected to do really well this year is going to have a meltdown and disastrous season because of NIL.
Maybe it’ll be Texas, maybe Texas Tech, maybe UT.
You can’t have this sort of thing in college sports and it not affect college kids negatively. If someone had thrown millions of dollars at me when I was in college I wouldn’t have handled it well, I can only imagine players today would have the same sorts of ego problems.
You see this sort of thing with young players in the NFL, too, where they get too big of an ego and want more money and create problems (see A.J. Brown).
On some team the tight end is going to say, “It’s not fair that the quarterback is getting $5 million and I’m only getting $20,000 from this company! I block for him and catch passes and make him look good! I should be making more money! I’m going to quit trying as hard until I get more money!"
And then the offensive linemen will want more. And the defensive players. And next thing you know the players aren’t really trying to win and to play as a team because they’re jealous of how much other players are getting that they think they’re just as good as.

But that won't be happening at VU so that is the upside of NIL.Golddore68 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 2:08 pm I’m predicting that at least one of the major college football programs expected to do really well this year is going to have a meltdown and disastrous season because of NIL.

Re: Prediction: At least one “powerhouse” football team will have a meltdown because of NIL this year
I am waiting for someone to announce they are pooling the stars NIL money for the whole team to share in equally. Or will they allocated based on some formula tied to years with the team, years starting, pancake blocks, catches, interceptions, tackles, tackles for loss, fumbles caused/recovered, yards per carry, yards after catch, etc.
It may make law firm compensation systems look simple.

I've said that from the very first time I heard of QBs getting 7-figure NIL deals.Golddore68 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 2:08 pm On some team the tight end is going to say, “It’s not fair that the quarterback is getting $5 million and I’m only getting $20,000 from this company! QBs have always been Big Men on Campus and with fans but college football has still maintained a "We're all in this together" mindset. When financial disparities THAT large happen, I don't see that mindset being sustainable.
As for pooling NIL, I can only think of what a niece who worked as a restaurant waitstaffer while in school once told me: "The day they take my $400 a night in tips and pool it with others who don't work half as hard as I do is the day I'm leaving."

Your niece may not realize it, but I suspect she would not make a good socialist.FayetteDore wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 4:40 pmI've said this from the very first time I heard of QBs getting 7-figure NIL deals.Golddore68 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 2:08 pm On some team the tight end is going to say, “It’s not fair that the quarterback is getting $5 million and I’m only getting $20,000 from this company! As for pooling NIL and redistributing based on some formula, I can only think of what a niece of mine who worked as a waitress -- uh, sorry, waitstaff person -- while in school once told me: "The day they take my $400 a night in tips and pool it with the others who don't work half as hard as I do is the day I'm leaving."

Meltdown as in not meeting expectations? That happens every single year without the NIL so I personally don't think this will worsen that. No doubt this changes the recruiting landscape and transfer portal but let's not blame everything on NIL like it is COVID or Y2K.

Consider the NFL. How many times do we hear about the star QB buying Rolex's, extravagant golf club sets, etc. for their linemen? Some day, some where, the guys in the OL room will remember this as well and say "where's ours?"

Yeah, unfortunately her family lived far enough away that I had no influence on her.VandyPhile wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 4:49 pmYour niece may not realize it, but I suspect she would not make a good socialist.FayetteDore wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 4:40 pmI've said this from the very first time I heard of QBs getting 7-figure NIL deals.Golddore68 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 2:08 pm On some team the tight end is going to say, “It’s not fair that the quarterback is getting $5 million and I’m only getting $20,000 from this company! Presumably though, everyone on a football team works hard or they wouldn't be on the team. So, Pool Away!

My experience has always been that law firm compensation systems are pretty simple -- same as La Cosa Nostra.

Let's see. 85 scholarship players, 365 days in a year. Each player gets to drive the Bentley 4.3 days per year.Seadog73 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 2:44 pm I am waiting for someone to announce they are pooling the stars NIL money for the whole team to share in equally. I think this could very well be a possibility, mostly due to age and lack of maturity. But frankly, is an early lesson in capitalism and the economics of sports. QBs have always been paid more due to their stature and potential to impact the outcome of the game. They've also been known for taking care of their OL and other players when they're in the pros. You've heard a few stories of that in NIL I believe. It will certainly be interesting to sit back and observe.

Yes there are teams which don’t meet expectations every year. I believe that NIL will contribute to at least one major tram not meeting expectations. It’s a major thing that coaches have to contend with now and some of them may not know how to handle it.cc11316 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 6:15 pm Meltdown as in not meeting expectations?
