WR Amir Abdur-Rahman has committed as a grad-transfer to...

Post by BrentVU »

...Ball State of the MAC. He will have two seasons left to play there if he desires.

Here's my list of Vandy's portal entries for 2021-22 and where they've committed to:

WR Amir Abdur-Rahman: Ball State
S Dashaun Jerkins: none
WR Cam Johnson: none
LB Brayden Devault-Smith: none
CB Gabe Jeudy-Lally: BYU
QB Jeremy Moussa: none
S Brendon Harris: Wake Forest
LB Michael Mincey: none
LB Alston Orji: none
OL Tyler Steen: Alabama
OL Jason Brooks: Oklahoma State
DL Alex Williams: none
DL Marcus Bradley: UMass
DL Rashaan Wilkins, Jr.: none
DL Jacques Hunter: none
DL Terion Sugick: Arkansas State
DL Lorenza Surgers: Minnesota

LB/DB De'Rickey Wright has reportedly withdrawn his name from the portal, but his status with the team is uncertain.

Note that 12 of the 17 guys on the above list (I think) will receive undergraduate degrees next Friday, making them graduate transfers-- which is a situation rather unique to Vandy.

P.S. I will always remember Amir Abdur-Rahman for this catch he made of a Kyle Shurmur pass as a freshman in 2018 vs. Tennessee...

Was Abdur-Rahman a player to be named later in the Riley Neal trade?

Cam Johnson announced a commitment today to Arizona State.

At least we’re unlikely to see him next year… for a while there it looked like he was going to wind up at Ole Miss.

Thanks for sharing this info, Brent. I think it is pretty significant to note that the majority of our transfers are earning degrees. It puts their transfers into perspective, because it is conceivable that not all of them will ultimately end up back on the field if they decide to move on with their lives. Grad school is a big undertaking and plenty of other schools have programs that VU doesn’t offer, or they might be less competitive in admissions. Plus, after graduating, many may be looking for a change of pace/scenery/etc. As fans we may be a bit disappointed by losing all these guys, and it will definitely create on-field challenges. However, there is no reason to disparage any of these young men for what is likely a difficult and well-reasoned choice that they made in their own best interests. I wish all of them well!

Sounds like Cam Johnson will be catching his passes from Emory Jones, the starter from Florida last year who entered the portal after the coaching change. Jones has committed to the Sun Devils as well. ("Can't tell the players without a scorecard!")

He'll definitely get his chances there. ASU has had massive defections, especially at the WR spot.

I understand that we might not have as many grad programs as some large state universities, but just as we may be prone to losing more grad transfers because we graduate more players, we should be an attractive destination for grad transfers, who, by definition, are more academically oriented than your average Div 1A player. However, that doesn't really seem to be happening.

Seem to remember a few under coach Mason, and having the same thought then.
Didn't we just get a grad transfer CB from UConn?

I agree this avenue could probably be more exploited. Will all the other disadvantages VU has in recruiting we should tap in to anything that's a positive.

Vandy has five guys coming in this fall as grad transfers:

OL Jacob Brammer, North Texas
DE Myles Cecil, Cal Poly
RB Cooper Lutz, Syracuse
CB Jeremy Lucien, UConn
P Matt Hayball, Florida Atlantic

Brammer, Lucien, and Hayball all have the ability to win starting spots immediately if they do all that's necessary in fall camp.

CDM's staff recruited several Ivy League grad transfers--Justice Shelton-Mosley (Harvard), Parker Thorne (Columbia), and Louie Vecchio (Penn) come to mind. Riley Neal was a grad transfer, too.

Probably a real long shot question, but anyone heard which grad programs ?
