Why would he switch? Is Auburn firing him?

The job security in Stillwater--with an alumnus head coach who just had one of the best seasons in school history and in a league which is soon to lose the program's primary nemesis--is vastly superior to the Plains, where it would surprise no one if Harsin was canned after two seasons.

Re: Derek Mason to Oklahoma State?
Would be a smart move for him, as someone mentioned above the league is about to get much easier for OSU & Auburn is a dumpster fire. Mason was one of the few bright spots this year for Auburn as the Mike Bobo experiment on offense panned out about as bad as most thought it would & plus now many of their players are hoping back on the Gus Bus down at UCF.

Potentially interesting wrinkle to this is that it appears that Mason is indeed leaving Auburn, but there's no confirmation that he's headed to Stillwater and may sit out a season: https://www.espn.com/college-football/s ... tor-auburn

Re: Derek Mason to Oklahoma State?
I'm going to take a guess here and say that 1) Vandy is under an obligation to continue to pay DM's salary but 2) DM is also under an obligation to try to find work and that if he does, his new salary counts against what Vandy should pay him. At least that's how I would have structured it. I don't know if most fired HCs are earning double salaries when they take jobs as coordinators or not. That would be ridiculous but in college sports I wouldn't say that it would surprise me. If I quit my lease I might still owe the future rents, but the amount due is probably also reduced by what the landlord can rent the place for in the meantime. Does that not apply to coaching contracts?
But if that's all true then it seems like he couldn't just quit and sit on his thumbs, or quit and risk having no job at all.

Re: Derek Mason to Oklahoma State?
I think every coaching contract I have read about (emphasis on "about") has a set-off provision that reduces what is owed by say Vandy to CDM by what he earns coaching elsewhere.
