A truly good guy who clearly believed that corporations have societal responsibilities and that quality education, especially public K-12 education, is essential. And importantly, acted on those beliefs. As Charleston said, a Vanderbilt man who did great good for the university.
Didn't realize it until I read the survivors in the obit but his brother is Jim Hall of Chattanooga, a UT man through and through and a pretty substantial guy in his own right. You may remember him as Chair of the National Transportation Safety Board who frequently appeared on national television during transportation disasters in the 1990s.

Mr. Hall is the reason I have always used Valvoline products. He was the chief benefactor to VU Athletics for many years. I wanted to support his company in my own small way to say thank you.

Wow, an incredible list of accomplishments. How did this man have time to do all that stuff?

Lisa Ashner Adkins of Lexington writes this tribute to John Hall in today's Herald-Leader...
‘Kindness and servant leadership.’ John R. Hall embodied a life of generosity.
