OT Demise of Conference USA

Post by MikenNashville »

With So.Miss and Old Dominion going to the Sunbelt after the AAC defections looks like conference USA, as far as football, is going the way of the WAC and the Big East.

I don't think this is going to happen but the chatter has started:

If EKU goes FCS D-1 in football, WKU and EKU and MTSU could be part of a new MAC-south division along with former MAC member Marshall and longtime MAC members Ohio U. and Miami (OH). The darkhorse candidate for this is "Liberty" (?)

This would put the conference at 16 members without "Liberty"

Biggest darkhorse in the chatter is Murray. They are way off the beaten path and would have to add a visitor side to the football stadium to even think about going FCS in football. (the football stadium actually does not have a visitor side... not even a small one)

In any case, the OVC looks all but doomed.

UPDATE

From Peter Thamel today on twitter:
Sources: The MAC is exploring potential expansion. School officials are expected to discuss expansion in the upcoming days. Among those expected to be discussed are Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky.

Marshall and "Liberty" are thought to be going elsewhere. UMass might be a MAC fallback plan. Not sure what the plans are still for EKU and/or James Madison.
