VU QB commit Drew Dickey draws Tim Tebow comparisons in 49-21 win

Post by BrentVU »

From the Austin American-Statesman:

Regents is playing like a team that is poised and destined to defend its state football championship.

That was evident very early in a 49-21 victory over St. Michael's on Friday night. The Knights scored four consecutive touchdowns in the first quarter following Crusader turnovers. With quarterback Drew Dickey accounting for more than 200 yards from scrimmage and linebacker Weston Benson leading a stingy defense, Regents looked unstoppable while improving to 4-0.

At Regents, a school accustomed to playing for state glory, the goal remains the same. Dickey and Benson said the Knights are capable of winning another TAPPS Division II title. On Friday, they scored 42 straight points before St. Michael's found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter...

Dickey accounted for four touchdowns, including a short run to give his team a 7-0 edge early in the first quarter. Before the first quarter was over, Regents scored three more touchdowns following interceptions by Jacob Wilburn and William Raeder and a fumble recovery by Will Pope...

Dickey, who will play at Vanderbilt next season, was steady in the pocket, completing 17 of 22 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. A bullish runner who sometimes resembles Tim Tebow while plowing through the line, he rushed for 63 yards and two more touchdowns on 10 carries.

"Sometimes he just glides, but he'll truck you if he has the chance to run you over," said Phillips, adding that his quarterback is a sturdy 210 pounds...

In a postgame huddle, Phillips and a few of his assistants told the players they played excellent football for a half, but there were too many breakdowns in the second half. It hardly mattered that the Knights once led 49-7 in the fourth quarter. To reach the pinnacle again, improvement must be made, they stressed.

"This was a personal game, a respect game," Dickey said. "With this team; the plan is to go back (to state) and win another one."
