Nah, they are just afraid they will get their butts kicked. And they would.

Dropped TWO games contracted with Northwestern, for 2013 and 2014 -- plus @Ohio State in 2013, all announced at the same time. Northwestern had defeated VU in 2012.

Poach can lose to OSU on his own, regardless of where he coaches. But we should have continuing home and away with the Wildcats, and not just in football. We have a ton of alum up that way to boot. As the big time schools get increasingly professional, as Auric pointed out, it makes a ton of sense for us to play more against schools that mirror more of who we are.

We played Wake all three years of the poach era and won all three. They mirror VU plenty enough.

They even wear black & gold.

Our tax dollars at work again. Guess it is not enough to be paying like 6 bad coach hires.

UT paid Army $500,000 not to play and will pay Akron a tidy sum too. If I lived in Tennessee I woul be appalled at the money being tossed around by an athletic department that seems to have no budget, and it is unpatriotic or cowardly (probably both) to escape this game. UT has no shame when it comes to trying to win. Just one more reason to support Vanderbilt.

Last year or the year before, then AD Phil Fulmer said that he was changing their football schedule for future years and making it easier.

Ever since the 80’s, UT has scheduled a big-name Top 25 nonconference game. Over the years they’ve played Syracuse, Notre Dame, Oregon, Virginia Tech, and other Top 25-type teams. They still played their share of weak teams like Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, etc., but they had one game exclusively devoted to a big-name nonconference opponent that always was nationally televised.

But Fulmer said the SEC schedule was too rough for his team (poor babies) and he was going to quit scheduling those type of nonconference games and get weaker opponents to give his team a better chance at a winning record.

Jared Stillman was roasting him for this on his show a couple of years ago when Fulmer made this announcement.

Even though Fulmer isn’t the AD anymore, it looks like that’s what they’re still trying to do, by removing Army and replacing with Akron.

It's not like they don't already play Ball State from the MAC next year (they do) but the worst of it is that they play ut-Martin. If uut played a few more MAC teams (like Bowling Green who they just played)... they could compete with Buffalo for a MAC regular season title. As long as Marshall doesn't rejoin the MAC. Then uut might end up battling Buffalo for second place.**

**Marshall rejoining the MAC is totally hypothetical. There are no rumors about it. Wink-Wink

Y'all crack me up.

UT played Oklahoma in a home and home series in 2014-15. Despite losing both, in 2017, they contracted for another two with Oklahoma: last year at OU (all SEC teams cancelled all non-con games last year, you'll recall) and OU travels to UT in 2024.

Since 2010:

2010 - UT v Oregon
2012 - NC State in ATL
2013 - @ #2 ranked Oregon (The same year that Poach cancelled the 2013 Northwestern game)
2014 - @ Oklahoma
2015 - Oklahoma
2016 - Va Tech @ Bristol
2017 - Ga. Tech and Southern Miss
2018 - West Virginia @ Charlotte
2019 - BYU
2020 - Oklahoma (cancelled)
2021 - Pitt
2022 - @ Pitt
2023- @ BYU
2024 - Oklahoma
2025 - Syracuse
2026 - @ Nebraska
2027 - Nebraska

They're the only SEC-E team who faces Alabama every year.

And one thing that UT has NOT done is scheduled a game with a small college with an enrollment of under 1,000, as Vanderbilt did with Presbyterian in 2012. (PC's enrollment is now about 1,100 but it was about 990 at the time. "This was a big win for us," Poach said. https://vucommodores.com/vanderbilt-routs-presbyterian/

And surely you know that NOT a penny of taxpayer money is paying off their former coaches or cancelled opponents, nor spent on football at all.

Fayette, do you approve of them dropping Army this late? Even Paul Finebaum, an alum, was critical yesterday.

No I don't.

Just like I didn't like the embarrassment that Poach wrought when he cancelled 2 games with Northwestern and the Ohio State game.

I approve of this schedule change. It is a bad look for Army to play ut, especially if it can get $500,000 and then play a quality opponent instead. ;->

IIRC about ten years ago UTK got scared and cancelled a series with North Carolina so they could play a couple of MAC games because you know Dooley. I’ll admit prior to the SEC going to an 8 game conference schedule the vawls always seemed to play at least one recently proven “Tier 1/top 20 type” OOC game. At the time I disagreed with the old bald poach dropping Northwestern but I did agree with decision to drop Ohio State.

So now Pitt and Syracuse are supposed to be the "national powerhouse" opponents for uut?

Pitt finished the year ranked ONCE in the last 15 years.

Syracuse was 1-10 last season and in the last 15 years, that was the second time of that. Also in that time frame, they have finished with:
2 wins
3 wins (twice)
and
also went winless in the Big East one year
and went 1-6 in the Big East four years in a row in that time

By the way as far as ut vs MAC teams, they were a 4 td favorite at home vs Ohio several years ago... who had to play a walk-on at running back due to injuries. It was 14-12 at halftime and 21-19 at the start of the 4th quarter. What else has uut done? Lost at home to upstart Georgia State. Played UTEP who hasn't won a ballgame since they were Texas Western and stunned UK in the basketball championship in the 1960's. Almost lost at home to UMass. Struggled vs D-1 newbie South Alabama. REALLY struggled vs Troy State. Excuse me for not being impressed by a team with a 100k capacity stadium that is overwhelmingly underwhelming.
