Burnt Orange Nation actually interviewed Kaufman, something that doesn't happen often for players in the portal. They report this about his decision to leave Vanderbilt, some of which is new information...
Kaufman got off to a strong start in his college career, starting the first two games, making 15 tackles and breaking up one pass while also serving as a kick returner, averaging 27.4 yards per return.
Then Kaufman contracted COVID-19 as the Vanderbilt team suffered an outbreak and was ruled out for the season in early November after developing myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle usually caused by a viral infection.
Isolated away from his family in Louisiana and unable to play football, Kaufman decided that he wanted to be closer to home — Auburn is a five and a half hour drive away from New Orleans and while Austin isn’t as close, it is a city where Kaufman said that he believes that he can build his brand with name, image, and likeness changes on the horizon.
Derek Mason is at Auburn; Jason Grooms and Taylor Searels are at Texas.

No big surprise. He and Mason apparently were really tight. Too bad for us.
