4/17 scrimmage

Post by Seadog73 »

I hope those who can watch on SEC Network+ as well as those who can attend in person will provide reports, impressions, for those who can't watch or attend.

So far, the offense is dominating (12 minutes left in 2nd quarter). Mike Wright and Will Sheppard are the stars to this point (Wright 2 passing TDs & 1 long run for a TD; Sheppard 3 TDS including an impressive "over the back" of a DB). Defense has made very few stops; offense has been up-tempo. Announcers said the Sheppard catch should be on sportscenter as a "You got Moss'ed".

Score is 38-5 (offense vs. defense).

Now halftime - 51-18 with the offense leading the defense.

Passing TDs - Wright 2, Seals 1, Moussa 1
Running TDs - Davis 1, Wright 1, either Davis or Griffin 1
Receiving TDs - Sheppard 3, Schoenwald 1

Offense is very up-tempo with a lot of out routes in space; running game has been pretty good (haven't seen Marlow, assuming banged up); balanced offense with a lean toward passing game. Mike Wright has run quite a bit when he's been in.

I was wondering who the receiver was its hard to tell in person with out the numbers. They aren't using player names over the PA either.

Also would add that Pierce does not let the first guy take him down.

CCL has his work cut out. Offense looks good but they are going against a defense that looks very weak and slow in the secondary.

The offense looked very sharp.
Even if the defense is in fact the worst in the world, you can plainly see that the offense was executing at a high level. All three qbs were decisive and their passes were on the money. Virtually no drops by the receivers and several great catches. Several great runs after catch. Great timing and sync along the offensive front.
Wright looks like he's competing for the starting position. Seals has the best arm of the three qbs and looked very impressive. He didn't have the big plays but I liked what he was doing. Wright has made a big jump from last fall to this spring. This could be a real battle, and whichever way it goes, we can't lose. They're both terrific and Moussa ain't too shabby either.

The defense had moments but the tackling in the secondary looked abysmal. I think CCL said at halftime that they were holding back schematically - which while I believe that - it still looks like they have a long way to go physically. Coaches can't magically bestow speed and athleticism upon players who simply don't have it.
The front seven, however, looks to have real potential- and in that area, once the coaches turn them lose and let them play fast - they could be very tough. But based on today, the secondary is going to need some guys to step up or this is going to be a tough year defensively.
