Post by BrentVU » Tue Jan 24, 2023 10:10 am

Carson Casteel, 6-2 222 LB from Michigan State (will be a redshirt sophomore, with three years to play)

Aeneas DiCosmo, 6-2 250 Edge from Stanford (one year left to play; a 4-star player out of high school)

Jacob Katona 6-4 270 DL from Stanford (comes in as a junior or redshirt sophomore; did not play at Stanford; should have three years to play)

Also announced that three of the 21 signees in the class of 2023 have enrolled early and are in school now: RB Sedrick Alexander, LB Ethan Crisp, and LB Jailen Ruth.

I am pretty sure Katona comes in as a preferred walk-on; I don't think he was on scholarship at Stanford.

Someone please tell me how to pronounce Aeneas because that one's too easy to get horribly wrong

Nice to see some transfers coming in. Would like to see some secondary help from the portal.

Couldn't we just come up with some NIL dollars and grab some NFL free agents. Really don't see the difference anymore. It looks like as soon as a player accepts NIL $, he becomes professional.

I know that someone who puts in for the draft is out as far a college ball goes, but if a guy tries out as a free agent and doesn't stick, can he go back and play in college?

Actually raises an interesting concept. What if Joe Superstar, a 5 star who played two years at bama, then went to the Titans, but quit after 5 years to finish his degree at Vanderbilt. Technically he would have two more years. Under the new rules could he play?

Sounds bizarre, but say he was a backup QB for 5 years and figured he could get his degree, play 2 more years, and get on with a new team.

I know that years of eligibility left and academic classification as a "sophomore," "junior" etc. are entirely different but just on the surface it seems like the post we saw earlier that VU coaches could only use the portal for freshmen and grad students isn't in effect here. Glad to see that.
