1918. - Vandy’s last Pandemic Season

Post by mtnvandy » Thu Sep 17, 2020 2:41 am

Gents,

I have referenced this before, but for those who are new to the board, here is some trivia:

In the Fall of 1918, football was a low priority with World War I still at issue and Spanish Flu reeking havoc.

Vandy had a good team that year.

According to The Tennessean and VUAD, Vandy hosted UT that season and crushed the Vols 76-0.

UTAD, however, denies that they fielded a team that season.

Just based on that score, I’d venture that UT’s claim was correct.

The score was not really an issue as to the validity of the game. According to UTAD, the team that travelled from Knoxville to Nashville that day, 102 years ago, was an Army training team.

VUAD noted that The Tennessean would not have covered the game if it was not a team from UT. FYI their reporter that day, Cisero Slack, wrote a literary masterpiece about the shellacking.
