Interesting Will Perdue take

Post by alathIN »

He talked about the biggest difference between the NBA and college is that college freshman come in with an exaggerated idea of how good they are and people surrounding them telling telling them they're the next NBA hall of famer. They don't recognize they have a lot of work to do. Perdue said managing these egos and entourages is the biggest challenge in college coaching.

I think there is something to this. Stack is used to dealing with professionals.
In the G-league his players would generally have been a couple years older than a college freshman, maybe a little more mature, and above all they know they need to work hard to get to the NBA level. They've run up against better players who schooled them.

Stack seems to gravitate to the older players, more mature players, those who know they have to work hard and get better to meet their goals. QMB and Trey Thomas didn't come here thinking they're automatic lottery picks. They have both achieved way above their talent limitations under Stackhouse.

Conversely, younger more talented players seem to sit on the bench, get disgruntled, and transfer out.

I think Will hit the nail on the head here.

perdue, who was a rough "project" as a freshman/soph, knows something about the subject. he worked his tail off, under the tutelage of ed martin, to become a vandy star....and later to earn those championship rings with the bulls.

And also worked his tail off to build a very respectable NBA career for a guy who was not massive or crazy quick. Not a stranger to hard work.

We sure have missed Ed Martin when we had project bigs (eg Obinna)
