Response from ADCSL on #32 jersey retirement

Post by Go Vandy! »

There was some logic behind the decision. You can make reasonable argument(s) whether to agree or disagree.

Good Evening Doug,

Thanks so much for reaching out. I appreciate your perspective, but do want to make sure you understand that we make a distinction between retiring numbers and retiring jerseys. As a department, we only formally retire jerseys.

In specific sports we’ve had instances where coaches may not allow student-athletes to wear certain numbers for a period of time (e.g., when someone tragically passes away as an example)—but we don’t officially retire numbers. So #32 will continue to be worn. This has actually been a long-standing policy (created during David Williams’ tenure and before we retired Perry Wallace’s jersey), but I recognize that externally everyone may not appreciate the distinction.

For example, Clyde Lee and Perry Wallace’s jerseys are retired—but their numbers are not. Even in our press release we simply refer to a “jersey retirement”.

I hope that is helpful to you. And I agree with you about Perdue and van Breda Kolff’s significant contributions! Thanks again for reaching out.

Sincerely,
Candice

Lee Fowler in the '70s wore Clyde Lee's number.
