Still in the individual NCAA women's singles and doubles

Post by charlestonalum »

Sharma is playing a Stanford player tomorrow in the round of 16 and she and Conteras upset the # 2 seed in doubles. It is possible that we could win both these individual titles and that would be consolation for the team loss to Stanford. Good luck girls tomorrow at Wake Forest tennis center. Read all about it below.

All the ladies advanced yesterday in singles and doubles. This is the first time ever two Vandy players have made it to the Elite Eight in the same year, and they are only the 3rd and 4th Vandy women to make it this far.

yes, today is the quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles and both of our women, Astra Sharma and Feranda Contreras, a the quarterfinals (elite 8). This is record breaking. Both of them are All Americans and now they are an All American doubles team - they did not play together during the season. The doubles tandem face Duke today. This is such a tremendous year - the loss to Stanford for the team final still stings, but these fine athletes are individually and as a doubles team making a lot of noise nationally that erases some of the disappointment. (Very little publicity about these great things.)

Contreras made it to the Final Four (7-5, 6-1), while Sharma is in a weather delay. Sharma is tied 4-4 in the 3rd set after going 2-6, 6-2 in the first two sets.

It's pouring right now, so who knows when this will finish.

Sharma in a tiebreaker to see who advances. Scoreboard not working, so only can watch the video stream.

We also lost doubles to Duke in a 3 set tiebreaker. Talk about close loses.
Today Contreras plays in the semi-finals -- has to be exhausted, but let's hope. Match is at noon ET.

Contreras falls 6-3, 6-3. She has got to be worn out with all the games she has played between the team games, doubles, and singles. We all should be proud of her getting this far, and to the success of the whole Vandy team.

There is a good chance of an all-Pepperdine final in singles.
