Path to the wildcard

Despite the loss Monday night, the Titans are in reasonable shape to make the playoffs. The Titans should be favored over the next four opponents (Jets, Jags, @Giants, Redskins). Win those 4, and the Titans will have good momentum to face off against an indoor Colts team in what will hopefully be freezing cold weather.

If they win all 5, then to make the playoffs, the following have to happen:
1. Ravens lose at least two (@Falcons, @Chiefs, Bucs, @Chargers, Browns). Likely
2. Dolphins lose at least one (Bills, Patriots, @Vikings, Jags, @Bills). Likely
3. Bengals lose at least one (Broncos, @Chargers, Raiders, @Browns, @Steelers). Guaranteed
4. Broncos lose at least one (@Bengals, @49ers, Browns, @Raiders, Chargers). Likely

The Colts don't even matter. If the Titans win out and the Colts manage to win all but the final game, the Titans own the tiebreaker (common games).

Of course the trick is actually win 5 in a row, including beating Luck for the first time. But having the other four teams falter will very likely happen, so the Titans will have the opportunity to prove they deserve to make the playoffs.

This has been a wild year. 3 of the 5 wins have been against division leaders (the Cowboys win looks even better after the Boys took down the Saints last night). 1 win was against the 2-0 Jags who had crushed the Patriots (since then, the Jags have lost all but 1 game). The other win was against the Super Bowl champs in one of the greatest games ever at Nissan stadium.

Despite having the #1 scoring defense for several weeks, the Titans have also been blown out 3 times (all to winning teams). They lost to a 8-3 team on a failed 2-point conversion. They did have a bad loss to the Bills, but it was on a last second field goal. And the Dolphins game was a complete crap shoot, lasting 9 hours as well as the Titans losing Mariota and Walker.

This week, the TItans face a Jets team with either one of their two gimpy QBs or a QB that has never been in an NFL game. This is the first of the must-win games, so hopefully the Titans not only win, but make a statement in the win.

The Titans played a really ugly game today (pick six, blocked FG, blocked XP, settled for field goals twice after a first and goal, converted just one third down), but they came through in the very end to save their season. This was a much needed win to get some confidence after two miserable losses.

Mariota came through in the clutch yet again. The Titans better give him a new contract this offseason.

Now the Titans have to get ready for the Jags Thursday night, who had a surprising 6-0 win over the Colts today. The Giants are looming two weeks from today, and they had a big upset OT win against the Bears.

It's going to very tough for the Titans to string together a 5 game win streak, but at least they are still alive to do so.

Updated wild card scenario:

Titans win out AND Broncos lose at least one AND Dolphins lose at least one AND (Ravens lose at least two OR Steelers lose at least two)

Titans (Jags 4-8, @Giants 4-8, Redskins 6-6, Colts 6-6)
Broncos (@49ers 2-10, Browns 4-7-1, @Raiders 2-10, Chargers 9-3)
Dolphins (Patriots 9-3, @Vikings 6-5-1, Jags 4-8, @Bills 4-8)
Ravens (@Chiefs 10-2, Bucs 5-7, @Chargers 9-3, Browns 4-7-1)
Steelers (@Raiders 2-10, Patriots 9-3, @Saints 10-2, Bengals 5-7)

The Titans have the easiest schedule by far (Redskins lost their 2nd string QB so they are down to Mark Sanchez), though the Titans are going to need to play better games than Sunday to win these.

The Broncos losing one more scares me more than the Ravens/Steelers situation. The Chargers may or may not be playing for anything in the final week, and I hate to rely on the Browns to knock them off at home.

I am just thrilled the Titans season is alive. If they had lost Sunday, maybe 20,000 fans show up Thursday night. It still might be just 40,000 since it is cold work/school night. If I have any complaints about the Titans fan base, it is they don't show up for December home games.

If not for a miracle play by the Dolphins, today would have been perfect.

Titans win the division if they win out AND Texans lose at least two of their three games (@Jets, @Eagles, Jags).

Titans win the second wild card spot if they win out AND Dolphins lose at least once AND Steelers and/or Ravens lose at least once.

The Titans do have a tough task next Sunday against a Giants teams that has won 4 out 5.

Update for week 15.

Titans make the playoffs by winning their last two games and either the Steelers or Ravens lose. Both of those teams are playing top teams on the road.

There is a good chance the Titans-Colts game gets flexed to Sunday Night Football since the winner likely makes the playoffs.

Titans did their part. Now it is up to the Chargers and Saints.

The Chargers failed last night. It really comes down to the Steelers losing to the Saints today. (Though a Texans loss to the Eagles gives us one more out)
