Scoop on Vanderbilt's two current visitors on campus

Post by ShaneKinnee »

The Vanderbilt coaching staff is coming fresh off their biggest recruiting weekend of the 2017 recruiting cycle. Most of the coaches were on campus for the 18 to 19 recruits that were on campus. However, on Sunday night and during the early week, the Dores' were out visiting a few of their commits and top targets. But the staff visits across the country didn't take too long as they are currently hosting two mid-week official visits.

Here's some intel and details on those two:

- The biggest and most important visitor on campus right now is 2017 Honolulu, HI (Punahou) DE Miki Suguturaga. The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder arrived in Nashville early Wednesday morning and will be on campus until Thursday night. So far within his recruitment, Suguturaga has taken official visits to Virginia and most recently Washington State this past Sunday and Monday. In addition, he will finish his visit to Nashville on Thursday and head to Utah for his final official visit over the weekend.

Coach Ah You and coach Marve went to see Suguturaga a few weeks ago during the start of the contact period. This will be the first time he sees the staff since and this will be a major visit as he will announce his commitment on National Signing Day. I like Vanderbilt's odds here, but I think they will have to make some moves during his visit in order to receive a commitment from him.

Something to keep in mind here with Suguturaga and whatever school he ends up choosing is he won't enroll into that programs in the 2017 recruiting cycle, but in the 2019 cycle. Directly after high school, he will be taking a LDS mission trip and will do so for the next two years. The staff has expressed to Suguturaga that they are totally fine with this and his offer from them is for the 2019 cycle.

- It was originally only suppose to be Suguturaga as the only official visitor for a rare mid-week visit situation. However, 2017 Yuma (AZ) TE Matt Walton decided to take an official visit to Nashville after a recent conversation with Derek Mason. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder was contacted by Mason over the phone on Monday night and was informed that the staff wanted him to come out and visit. Walton holds offers from programs like Florida Atlantic and San Diego State, but is getting major interest from both Vanderbilt and Arizona State. After his visit to Nashville, he will be taking an official visit to see Arizona State this past weekend.

Vanderbilt has several spots to fill between now and National Signing Day. They have some major needs at cornerback, defensive end, linebacker, and receiver. But getting a tight end like Walton, who has pure athletic and jump ball ability might be too much to pass up. During his senior season, he recorded 39 receptions for 690 yards on 10 TDs. He also played defensive end at high school and put up 42 tackles and 6 sacks.
