Re: Coaches' buyouts

I actually think that's pretty brilliant. Whether you could get it past an agent is the question... agents are looking for guaranteed pay for their clients. But you're right, I think most coaches would go for it if it were presented properly to them. And it would certainly help protect the universit...

Offense: Three weeks of as bad as I can remember

These last three weeks on offense have been about as bad a three-game stretch as I can remember... and that's saying something. (I lived through Coach Mac's first year, and Woody's first year.) The painful stats are: South Carolina: 189 offensive yards, 7 points, 12 first downs Florida: 128 offensiv...

Some thoughts on the loss to UK

I know everyone wants to talk about the coaching situation, but I want to talk about the game I watched yesterday. It started out fairly well, as Vandy's second possession turned into a nice touchdown drive (key play: a double pass from Riley Neal to Cam Johnson to Ke'Shawn Vaughn). After a strip of...

Re: UK is begging to be picked off

I see three possible outcomes to this game: 1. Vandy wins... that would speak for itself. Vandy has lost to Kentucky the last three years, and Coach Mason has only beaten them once in five tries, so any kind of win would be significant. 2. Vandy plays poorly and loses. 3. Vandy shows some pride and ...

UK is begging to be picked off

In case anyone still cares... Kentucky is a team that is begging to be upset this week. They have a receiver playing quarterback, and they don't have a passing game. They had a golden opportunity last week to knock off Tennessee... first and goal from the six for the win, with their home crowd roari...

GatorCountry writer statistically compares VU to Towson of FCS, whom UF beat 38-0 in Sept.

He writes... While watching, it felt to me like the Commodores put up less of a fight than did Towson, one of the Gators’ FCS opponents. Those Tigers are presently ranked No. 21 in the FCS Coaches’ Poll, so maybe it’s not so far off... In the current Sagarin combined FBS and FCS ratings, Vandy is No...

A couple of belated thoughts on the Florida wipeout

1. We finally saw Allan Walters, and his first pass was a bad pick. But... hey, it was his first college action, and it did come in the Swamp. Later, I did see Walters get chased out of the pocket, extend the play and complete a pass... which I don't think Deuce Wallace did all afternoon. 2. Ke'Shaw...

Re: CDM confirms Riley Neal will play this Saturday

Realistically, I have to think that Neal's presence affects Vandy's chances-- and the betting line-- in a big way. With Wallace playing meaningful snaps, Vandy has gone seven quarters without the offense scoring a point (and with the offense giving up some points to the opposing team). Riley Neal's ...

Here's a good NFL scouting report on Vandy's 'Big 3'

Vaughn has the skill set to eventually become a rare three-down back at the next level. His compact frame and patience at the line of scrimmage allows him to get skinny through the hole once he finds a crease... Currently a top-50 player on my draft board, Pinkney should be selected somewhere in th...

Re: Mason on 104.5 3HL: Wallace to start, Walters is backup, Neal should travel

P.S. It does seem to me that defensive players have been targeting Ke'Shawn Vaughn for late hits. Last week South Carolina's Kinlaw blatantly kneed him after the whistle, which induced him to throw a punch and draw a penalty. Another time he was hit late out of bounds, said something about it to the...

Mason on 104.5 3HL: Wallace to start, Walters is backup, Neal should travel

On in interview on 104.5 yesterday, Coach Mason said Deuce Wallace would start, Allan Walters was prepared to be the backup, and that Riley Neal should be well enough to make the trip. "Deuce has looked good (in practice this week) knowing he's the starter." He also has some comments about defensive...

Hey guys, Vandy has a chance to knock off a Top 10 team on ESPN

Florida is ranked No. 10 in both polls. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. I know what you're thinking. Vanderbilt has no chance. (Or only a 3.1 out of 100 chance if you're the ESPN.com FPI.) Florida has one of the best defenses we will see, and Vandy is going down to the Swamp down two ...

4. Poachers 28, Gophers 21
5. Oregon State +10 over Washington on Friday night

Bonus: (not for contest) Western Kentucky over Arkansas, Chad Morris gets fired next week

Boston: Patriots rookie Joejuan Williams saving 90% of his income

Taught by one of the assistant football coaches, Greg Carson, the personal finance class at Father Ryan introduced Williams to the basics of investing and retirement planning. He learned about hedge funds, 401(k) plans, certificates of deposit, and Roth IRAs. He learned how to budget and how to fil...

About Allan Walters

Walters is 6-2, 210, a 3-star recruit from Chatham, N.J. He played at The Peddie School alongside VU offensive lineman Dan Dawkins, who, like Walters, is also a redshirt freshman. Walters was the No. 3 guy behind Shurmur and Hasan last year, but never got into a game. This season he's been No. 4 beh...

Re: Coach Mason to Joe Fisher

At the South Carolina game, Walters moved to the headset where he was signaling in plays to Deuce. I am pretty sure this was the first time he's been tasked with doing this all season. Not saying that he wasn't prepared for that, but just that I think it was a new experience for him. Usually QB's ha...

On Saturday, ESPN College Gameday will broadcast live from the quad at the University of Alabama. The quad will be full of sign-waving Tide fans getting ready for their biggest regular-season game of the year. The atmosphere should be electric. Later LSU and Alabama will kick off in the biggest regu...
