SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has released a statement that if Mississippi does not remove the Confederate flag from its state flag, the SEC will consider not allowing conference championship events to take place in that state.
The leadership of both Ole Miss and Mississippi State support Sankey’s statement.
“It is past time for change to be made to the flag of the State of Mississippi,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a recent statement. “Our students deserve an opportunity to learn and compete in environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all.
“In the event there is no change, there will be consideration of precluding Southeastern Conference championship events from being conducted in the State of Mississippi until the flag is changed.”
Some Mississippi legislators in Jackson are considering legislation to remove the “Stars and Bars” but reports say that the bill may not make it out of the committee.
