Player Evaluation: LSU commit Treyvion Holly

Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers added a major piece to their 2023 recruiting haul over the weekend when it was announced that 4-star running back Treyvion “Trey” Holly had committed to the school.

Holly – an in-state prospect out of Union Parish (Farmerville, LA) High School – stands at 5-foot-8, 180 pounds and is highly regarded by all the major recruiting sites.

Holly is rated by the 247 Composite as a 4-star prospect. He is viewed as the No. 184 player nationally in the class, the o. 10 rubbing back, and the No. 14 player in the state of Louisiana. Holly chose to sign with the Tigers – Baton Rouge being under four hours from Farmerville certainly factoring into the decision-making process – over offers from the likes of USC, Florida State, and TCU.

Holy has had an absurd amount of success as a running back for Union Parish. He will graduate having played varsity football for five seasons as he initially broke into the Farmers lineup as an eighth-grader. Holly has a full senior season yet to play – and a couple of Covid affected years – yet he already has over 900 carries, just under 8,000 rushing yards and 108 touchdowns on the ground.

You can see in the video below the type of running back that LSU is acquiring in Holly. The first play is pure gas. Holly’s stature allows him to get lost behind the line and he explodes through a gap and is into the secondary in an instant. His top end speed is legit and he is simply never going to be caught from there.

The second play is much more interesting. Holly has amazing quicks and agility, but it is his almost photographic knowledge of the field situation that sets him apart. Spinning into space would net most backs a nice 10-yard gain, but Holly already knows where the next defender is coming from. He uses this knowledge from his peripherals to immediately cut to his right and then smashes the gas to score a long touchdown.
Great recruit for a change of pace back who will be deadly at the college level.
