Player Evaluation: Florida Commit Miguel Mitchell

Florida Gators Recruiting Update

The Florida Gators are in a full-scale rebuild after a brutal season that saw the end of the Dan Mullen reign and the installation of Billy Napier as the 29th head coach in the history of the program.

Napier has hit the ground running on the recruiting trail looking for impact players in the upcoming class of 2022 and he thinks he has found a good one in 3-star athlete Miguel Mitchell out of Oxford (Oxford, AL) High School.

Mitchell will most likely be given his first shot at Florida in the defensive backfield as a safety. The 6-foot-1, 205 pounder is rated by the 247Sports Composite Rankings as the No. 891 player in the class, the No. 65 athlete, and the No. 34 player in the football-rich state of Alabama. He chose Florida over a list of finalists that included Memphis, Northwestern, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.

Mitchell is a player that has grown on the field over the last couple of years. His initial commit was to Vandy, but as he continued to improve as a player bigger Power Five schools became interested. That is when he elected to reopen his recruitment and Florida took advantage of this to land their fourth member of a rebuilt secondary during the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Mitchell was a two-way player in high school, but the video below showcases his best defensive work. In the first play, Mitchell showcases his footwork and his ability to stick to a wide receiver even when not looking at the quarterback. The way he slides in front of the pass-catcher at the last moment to make an interception is very impressive.

The second play is the complete opposite. In this play, Mitchell is playing centerfield as a safety watching the quarterback the whole way. As soon as the ball is thrown he breaks into the spot to leap and make an interception. Being able to blanket a receiver as a cornerback and play eyes on the quarterback as a safety are two completely different skillsets and Mitchell has both in his locker.
