Ole Miss Football Three Keys: Memphis

Three keys Ole Miss

Ole Miss faces Memphis on Saturday in Memphis. Here are your three keys to a Ole Miss win over Memphis.

Key 1 – Matt Corral Shines

Ole Miss is going to probably need to score 30 points or more to win this game. That means rookie starting quarterback Matt Corral needs to have a superb game in Memphis. Corral has all the awards and stars by his name. Now it’s time for him to grow up quickly and lead his offense to the opponent’s end zone. It could get rough for Corral because he’ll have seven other new starters in the huddle with him.

Key 2 – Slow Down Brady White

Brady White is what makes the Memphis offense go. Last season the Tigers nearly 43 points a game with White completing 246 of 392 passes for 3,296 yards, 26 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. After this game, we’ll have a good idea as to whether the Rebels have improved or not on defense. If they can hold Memphis to under 30 points then they are likely an improved unit.

Key 3 – Win the 3rd Down Battle

The third most critical statistic (other than Turnover Ratio and Points) to a team’s success is the third-down conversion rate. Last season Ole Miss’ offense converted third downs 35% of the time and on defense, opponents were able to convert on 40% of their third downs. Meanwhile, Memphis’ offense converted on 47% of third downs and limited opponents to a 39% third-down conversion rate. Allowing opponents to convert of 40% is not good but the Rebs have double-digit starters returning on defense so that should improve for sure.

After years of Memphis struggling, it’s still kind of weird to see Memphis being favored over an Ole Miss team. This is a pretty good Memphis team though, and they are playing on the road. Still, being the underdogs should provide some motivation for the Rebels.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 11:00 AM CT (12:00 PM ET). Watch on the ABC Network.
